Is anyone here actually able to read the Iliad and Odyssey in Ancient Greek? Does it really improve the experience?

Most children will be in their second year of highschool when they're 14. Are you telling me you learned Latin, properly, intimately, in under 2 years?

It's not far fetched at all. If he started learning in middle school, especially with the assistance of a good teacher, he could've been reading by 14. Most US public schools start language classes in high school, and even then the teachers (and the students) suck.

If we aren't talking about moon runes languages you can learn one well enough to read (with the aid of a dictionary for less common words) in 6 months or less.
It's a lot about how do you immerse yourself in the language and how much you are motivated. That's why ppl who go to live in foreign countries learn a language way quicker, because they are exposed to it and need it on daily basis.

I’ve taken a class on Homeric Greek, but I still don’t read it as fluently as I like. That said, I think it is true that you probably can’t get a good sense of Homer’s rapidity and plainness if you read it in translation (Matthew Arnold famously devoted two lectures to this topic). It’s good fun and I recommend it.
