When did you realise that reading, on its own, has no intellectual worth and only active engagement through the combination of reading, writing critically, and conversation (or any quick feedback) (learning from mentors, discussing with peers, teaching to others) can lead to a worthwhile humanities education?

Me, after I read many history books and forgot almost everything except a vague outline.

When I realized I couldn't read all the books in a single library. So what does this mean exactly? It's possibly to memorize all books with time?

>you have to pay attention to what you're reading
Very insightful.

I realized this pretty quickly but i'm too lazy to take notes and do rereadings. Also, you should only do this with important works. There's no way you'll be able to read, reread, and write about every random book you read. It's only the top of the top that deserves this kind of attention.

People that read too much are greedy for knowledge. Be humble that you don't know shit.

I read and then use it on a debate on some random discord. Problem solved.

Where to find these discords?

Idk I always surprise myself with how much I actually remember when the topic or book actually comes up in some natural circumstance. The subconcious is a weird thing.

I'm building my own personal TiddlyWiki with the stuff I read from books, so I can focus the information that is strictly valuable to myself.

The conversation part is quite useless when you realize that the people worth talking to are in no way accessible to you except through books that they have written. No point discussing things with brick walls.

Please give us the direction to good literary/philosophy discords. The only thing i can find there is discord trannies. There must be quality places, right?

You find "Portal" discord servers, id est, a server that categorizes and gathers server's links:

https://discord.gg/pxpGkE

I especially advise you to check Calliopean Club, POLITICS and Destiny's discord [https://discord.gg/6uaj7b]. have fun debating

[I mostly use the Calliopean Club discord; people there are usually smart despite the exceptional brainlet that doesn't understand basic epistemology]

I read books for fun and to learn more about myself and other people. It's also an untedious way to expand my vocabulary and understanding of prose. My uni essays constantly improve the more I read, and even without a formal book discussion I can feel literature informing how I talk about every subject. That said, OP is right, having someone to talk to about your reading will drastically increase the impact of the work. I wish someone was willing to read Lolita with me :'(

No replacement for long and drawn out meditations on what you read, and for thinking, on and off about them for years. A good book should stay within you after it's finished, and you should find yourself occainally wondering about even a month or a year after that.

the point is to use the knowledge you gain through active creation. this iw why specialization and vertical learning is shallow and pointless. combine literature with visual and time based medium, combine it with viology and obscure cartography. maths numerology and ancient assyrian. only bu hungrily consuming all information and forming connections between seemingly disparate knowledge will anything fruitful ever be found.
