The Confidence-Man is good, a bit boring at times but droll nonetheless

White-Jacket is the SGOAT (second greatest of all time)
I'm part of a zuckbook group about Melville and I think there's a lot of frustration in it that people just want to talk about Moby Dick or Bartleby

If I have only read Moby Dick, with which one of his works should I start with?

Some people like Typee a lot more than I do, which isn't to say that I dislike it. I just tend to view it as something important to read to understand the evolution of Melville's work. It's the first Melville book where I think you can feel him escaping Hawthorne's shadow.
Of course, I could be wrong, but I think most people reading Typee these days are reading it more out of critical/historical interest than a desire to just read it, if you get what I'm saying.

Pierre is also pretty good, I won't dispute that. It's probably better written than White-Jacket, I just prefer the latter.

Try Pierre or The Piazza Tales

Pierre and Confidence-Man are too big brain for me

I love Billy Budd, White Jacket, and Bartleby

Uh, sure, but you might be better of reading a Gaugin biography.

Bartleby, Billy Budd, the Confidence Man, and his poems are all top-tier. Not on the same level as Moby-Dick, but then again, nothing really is. Also, he tried to revert to more mainstream novels/novellas after Moby-Dick was a commercial failure.

Pierre is what came after MD, and that book just goes off the rails with complex sentences and incest. Hardly a conventional novel.
