It's even worse when you consider that story about what he said to the black kids in his writing class and the fact that he was a linguistic prescriptivist. He was so clever and showed so much empathy in the Gately chapters that it's hard to believe that he was this much of a snob at heart, but I just can't think of what other purpose this chapter served. The interpretation that got posted in the TPK the other day was interesting but it didn't explain why the Ebonics had to be so exaggerated and out of touch.
