Never really understood this until I studied nutritional science. Most of what people 'know' is shilling from a literal 'big sugar' that wants to keep feeding people shit. In reality, we're not even sure what carbohydrates do but we do know that refined sugar is literal drugs that behaves unlike anything in nature which is why its in your goddam McDonalds fries.

The same way I deal with anyone telling me that philosophy is useless: congratulate them on being a sensible person who doesn't waste their time on empty sophistry.

Also, what does this have to do with literature?

Eventually everyone comes to an obstacle that no amount of knowledge or regurgitated facts can solve

Tell them you only study political philosophy and when your party takes over, you will cut out the tongue of every scientist who dares to speak against the sacred ethical doctrines that keep you from slaughtering the masses, raping entire cities, burning houses, bombing factories. Basically you just say, call me when the police are buttfucking you and you need a bro with Phd in the philosophy of law to rangle you up some loopholes.
Science is dead as far as I can tell, anyhow. There really only exist philosophers and technicians, as scientists can argue the use of philosophy without communication technology. If they give you too much problem, just insinuate that their perspective is caught between the fanaticism of rationality employed in the French revolution and the hubris of idealism that left so many in USSR unemployed and starving. Tell them science is magic without the spectacle but with all the pomp.

Von Braun, Schrödinger, Turing, Einstein, etc think it isn’t. I dont care, although a philosophy degree is pretty useless.

ask them "useless for what"?
most of them can't answer.
others will say things like "progress"
then ask "progress towards what"?

whatever answer they gave deconstruct them with questions. They will contradict themselves or they get tired.

>We are not sure what carbohydrates do?
This is your brain solely on the humanities, folks. The problem is you took a joke nutrition course instead of a biochemistry/organic chem course. Look up Glycolysis, Krebs Cycle, Electron Transport Chain, Glycogenolysis, Gluconeogensis, etc - should take you 10 minutes at most to conceptually understand what carbohydrates do.
>We are not sure what carbohydrates do
I'm still in disbelief. And I agree with OP in the sense that there is a usefulness to philosophy (especially development of critical thinking, logic, etc) for scientific endeavors. However, I don't think I've ever read an opinion that made my blood boil more than yours, so congratulations if that was your intention.

I'm not a STEM major. In fact I was DUDE SPACE IS BIG posting in some shitty space fedora thread here a couple of days ago. You still have to go through life being the emabarrassing tryhard that you are. Reading philosophy is for people who were too literally retarded to think of such obvious concepts as adolescents, and you will never meet someone who doesn't resemble your pic related who cares about what you think.

Philosophy and science are very similar in the sense that it's all about following a strict set of rules and putting your faith in them trusting that they will solve all of life's problems and in that sense religion even falls into the same camp despite all of the arguments that seem to the contrary
Basically on just about any level people always have a very strong tendency to fall back onto whatever they've put their faith in
Of course what you eventually realize through all of this what is really happening is that most people are simply seeking out some kind of order or framework around which to build their lives and we see that faith is really just a tool for creating that
But that process of using faith to create order has a predictable side effect of also facilitating dependency
All of this is just to say that human beings are extremely dependent creatures
What we perceive as contradictions between these dependencies is little more than our own ego getting the better of us the arrogant thought that the dependencies of such a lowly creature of all things could ever stand against the vast complexities of our universe and not be dwarfed just the same

philosophy in general isn't really about 'problem solving' in a practical sense. perhaps this misunderstanding of what actually constitutes philosophy as such is the reason it is so disregarded. if you (falsely... but here we get into philosophy again) set up philosophy and science to be two opposing sides of utilitarian problem solving then of course science comes out looking like the best option. but actually distinguishing between words and concepts as to not trick yourselves and others into making connections that shouldn't exist in the first place does not fall under the purview of science. otherwise we just get stupid ass meme graphs that are trying to prove something marginally related which is frustrating for everyone except trolls

Most STEMfags also hate the science fandom. We are aware of the few limits of our craft and are not so hubristic as to denounce an entire college department to feel superior.
Dont even worry about it basically.
