I have no explanation for that one, though I have always enjoyed his work. I could take it to /int/ later but I have no time right now. My image is just about nightmares and various imagery they might contain. Incidentally a nightmare auf Deutsch is an "elfdream" as indicated in my image title.

That little motif is very interesting. The demon sitting on her chest is called a 'mare', hence the english 'nightmare', and I suppose it was considered a type of elf, explaining the german example you gave. Furthermore in norwegian the word for nightmare is 'mareritt' aka a 'mare ride'.

Sorry if you already knew this, I just felt like spewing out trivia I guess.

It appears that Gunther cheated during the martial challenges that were set to him as qualifiers for Marriage to Brunhild by using a magic cloak that Siegfried loaned him. She was butthurt about it so she tied and hung him spider-style on the wedding so she could observe him in his torment of not being able to consumate his marriage.
