Are they too common to be published? Do publishers really hate books about young men grappling with suicidal thoughts, loneliness and depression because these manuscripts are common?

I wrote a version of it myself.

If all my ideas turn out to just keep being trash, I'll just kill myself. I see no point with the ride. I can't have a single original thought that is interesting.

all these themes are in the book I'm working on, but I forced enough of a plot in that even if people get sick of my Undergroundesque ramblings they will at least have a half decent story to follow. no idea if it will sell.

nobody publishes these because nobody but people like you want to read these. they have no appeal except to other people like you, of which there are many but not enough to have a market.
that said, anything can be published if that's all you want. you have to write it in a way that it'd be publishable, which is not how you'd want to write in the first place, so don't bother.

nobody wants to read that shit, how lazy are you that you have to basically make yourself the main character in your story...

Why is Taxi Driver so critically acclaimed then? Aside from capturing 1970s NY

Has it ever occurred to you to write, oh I don’t know, and actual story?

Like seriously? Fuck Joyce, and all his angst-queen melodramatic semi-intelligent teen followers. Write a story about knights and barbarians or space hussars or something. Or adultery, every great story ever from the Iliad to the Arthurian tales to Proust has been about adultery.

One of these won the Pulitzer prize a while, back, although it was a non-white male, which probably had something to do with it.

To be fair the book is somewhat unusual, and also not strictly about Oscar, there are other characters it follows

I've written actual stories, Anon. I swear I have.

The problem is that nothing ever felt sincere. I was in great pain and I could not lie to myself anymore into writing about the adventures of these courageous heroes and their abstract virtues when I'm going broke, have no friends, barely have what to eat and must spend my whole day in the mall because it has Wi-Fi and I can't afford an internet bill.

I feel like a failure compared to everyone around my age and can't skip a day without thinking about suicide. I was in so much pain that nothing felt sincere. Writing this novel has been an exercise of exorcism. Of course I had to delete a lot of my first draft in order to still have a a coherent plot instead of an essay about dperession. I think I had an interesting take on romance, overcoming suicide and accepting life as it is. I failed it in real life and I'm the quintessential suicide by 30 guy, but I entertain the thought that a self-insert character is like the ancient greek tragedies, and a miracle will happen to save the day when it is bleak.

Can I do this but the "protag" never getting over it and eventually swallows buckshot in a dude's field. The guy finds him there, eventually his manuscript in his car, then publishes his story and becomes known as "the great tragedy of our time"? Feels like it would make me a hack, but this is a story I've been rolling through my head for years now.

I mean, Anon, it's not so different from what so many people like me are writing. But we probably write in different tongues.

The premisse sounds cool but would that really work as a story? I mean, poor guy. That's likely what will happen to most of us (minus the "greatest romance ever" part, of course), but my philosophy as a writer is that suffering must play a role in the plot. I've done my fair share of unfairly punishing my characters because my day was horrible, yet the second draft saw me deleting half of it because of how redundant the suffering was.

I'm just concerned you'll torture this guy for 70 thousand pages and then torture him some more, as he finds success only after death. It has happened before with real life writers, though.

I'm not in America, thank God.

Americans have become retarded with identity politics. I swear: everything I read is just tainted with "FUCK DRUMPFFFF!"-tier nonsense, even fantasy and sci-fi. You can't write about sorrow anymore, it has to be the sorrow of some minority. I'm sure everyone will relate to the problems that my character has, not only people of his race and "woke" virtue signalling fools.

i-it's only 320 pages so far. I just want to self insert, but make the problems insurmountable so I feel guilty for being a piece of shit do-nothing in my actual life enough to fix my own problens instead of being a toxic clingy bitch

Because there's more to the film than just that. It's a violent noir thriller that can be enjoyed at a surface level as well. It also helps that the protagonist is a 'Nam vet, the plight of whom really resonated with the American populace.

I'm going to speak my mind and say that I "woe is me" literature boring. It's mostly self-indulgent pap with zero self-awareness or intrigue. Learn how to write an engaging story before you try to write a damning inditement of 21st Century life.
