If English is your second language and you have to write in English for school or work or whatever, you should have pic related on your shelf. Close second is the BBI Combinatory Dictionary of English. Or just get both. The former is more user friendly, and the latter is more in depth. There are also online collocation dictionaries, but I really think these two are superior, and you can get used copies pretty cheap online.

This is the other weird "guidebook" I own. My friend bought it at a used bookstore. It's full of diagrams on how to build "psionic beam generators" out of quartz crystals for use in "martial arts and spiritual development." It's concentrated insanity and I will cherish it forever.
