I've never found fantasy to compare favorably with science fiction. In fact id say science fiction makes better use of fantasy elements eg Dune. Trying to read something like Tigana is a real chore to me, I couldn't find what I was supposed to get out of it.

/lit/ is going to deny this, but in terms of raw intelligence, most philistine stem types probably are smarter than most cultured, well-rounded people who study the humanities. i think it's a mistake to see intelligence in itself as a virtue or to believe that it necessarily leads to wisdom or produces creativity and original thinking. if you gathered everyone at the extreme right of the bell curve, i suspect you'd find a lot of people who mostly read fantasy and sci-fi, or don't read fiction, or think that science has replaced philosophy, or insert whatever vulgar stemlord stereotype you like.

Reading fiction is not inherently more worthwhile than watching a TV series or playing videogames.

A book represents a single person's myopic, usually negative, worldview and eats up more time than, for example, a movie.

Sci-Fi and fantasy (usually) isn't trying to be a representation of the world we live in and, without those restrains, can be more viscerally entertaining.

Anecdotally, reading some hard Sci-Fi collections has led to interesting thought experiments at least.

Most fiction that is anchored in the real world doesn't really offer me anything in terms of ideas that I can take seriously and is, generally, a bit depressing which I don't need to encourage. I'd rather read something fun. Life has misery a-plenty.

If they are STEM fags they probably have other hobbies like programming or stargazing.

One of the smartest people I know(of my age) only plays Piano as a hobby, he doesn't really do much else, and I don't think that it's because he has some autistic love for playing Piano, it has more to do with him not having any real passion.

Passion is not completely related to intelligence, some smart STEM fags, when asked what they want to do with their life say "research" or "science" or maybe "hi-tech", they aren't in it for the passion(every STEM fag "likes" science, few feel a passion towards it), they just know that those sorts of paths will atleast challenge them.
