We're having a /lit/ meetup in Ulaanbaatar.

Email tuvaliterature at gmail if you're interested & I'll give you the place & time.

>Why?

If you've been to university organizations, reading groups, or hung out in a ger on the tels with your bros smoking ganja, you've noticed the stifling halis-walking culture. And also that no one sings kargyraa, just boring Kenny G khoomei bs.

>What?

Something in the vein of Orphan's Lament. Discussion, critique, &c.

I'm probably an alcoholic. There is no need to be a rapist, the girls here are nice. The weather is also just something you are used to, I think, and the great distance has its charms. I like it here, actually.

Not by inconceivable stupidity,
Not by the way of worldly people,
Not by playing around with theories -
This wretched mind, wonderful as it is,
Quite unprepared, scorns the many
Instructions of Lama Vajradhara.
We shall abandon our careless manner,
Cavorting through nearby lands,
And, carefully, we shall follow his advice.
May we be the protector of beings.
A thief imposes his lifestyle,
Grasping here and there; but, unlike him,
Maybe not go astray in the world.

Padmasambhava of Orgyen, I
Pray to you without respite.
People in this world suffer from
Protracted ignorance.
Paltry results of existence
Proceed apace, if we ignore them.
Protracted thought
Provides the breadth of one's mind with failure.
Pissing it up, you think of gulping down, all
Passion for the world is lost.
Pleasure it is, for sure, to meet the wife who, im-
Pulsive, screams out.
Propriety, when you experience a thing,
Prejudices its quality overmuch.
People with a breadth of understanding, more and more
Perceive what they see to be magic.
Petty nuisance, you might call me –
Plenty of years my mother has loved me.
Buddha I’ll be straightaway, by the
Power of meaningful Dharma.

The branches of trees
Sway in the wind.
My mind moves
Clearer than moonlight.
Although I’ve left for the northern Khangai,
My mind remains behind.
Soaked will I be in mockery
For years to come.
Kindness and ancient true prayers
Have brought me benevolence.
Without delusion, all the days of my lives,
May I enjoy them both.
May I live
In the air of peaceful joy.
In the shade of a colorful bloom
May my loving mind be pacified.

A lot of them are alcoholics and they're naturally more confrontational than other east asians. I suppose if you live in a isolated, frozen wasteland picking fights is a way to let off some of that angst though a lack of opportunities in the country doesn't help and only adds to the listlessness, like in a lot of post-soviet countries. Not that Mongolians can articulate that very well mind. They're like kids who are down and out in most places I guess, except they're huge and pack a big punch so they can afford to wear a bit of a swagger. Foreigners often get assaulted in clubs if they get too friendly with local women, for example. That's part genuine racism, part thrill of the fight. They can be fun guys, but if you see them in action you'll understand how they conquered a third of the world once.

I forgot to answer this...

My understanding is that aside from The Secret History of the Mongols and some poets there isn't much to speak of in terms of national literature. There is one poet, Galsan Tschinag, that I enjoy. He wrote a lot in German as well.

From what I gathered books are really expensive and people would rather not spend their money on them. Almost every home I walked into had a small handful of books, if any. Reading culture isn't common. Every time I would go reading in a local cafe (there was a grand total of one in my area) or public square people thought I was weird for not just wanting to use the WiFi and leave.

Expensive books + few translations or native works + lack of reading "culture" = people that still probably are more cultured than /lit/ but read about the same amount.

Hardly anyone speaks decent English outside the capital. There are a few areas with a Russians like Erdenet but they are fucking boring so you'll want to stay in the capital and take excursions to the countryside (Khövsgöl Nuur is my top recommendation...the Gobi is also one people like but it's honestly boring to me).

I like Mongolia and Mongolians but damn, they are some of the most child-like and aggressive people I've encountered in all my travels. The country itself is like a second or third tier Russian city, as well, and I don't have much faith things will get better given how bad pollution and unemployment are in UB, which is a city the USSR designed for 500K people and it now holds something in excess of 1.5M and growing. The outskirts are just slums of uncountable gers with no law and order, just pumping out masses of coal pollution.

The less-well educated ones who live in the cities are in my experience, but like with /pol/ it's partly an outlet for their listlessness. The ger-dwelling nomads are a lot friendlier, for the most part, though there are still a few total loons. Some are literal barbarians too who build bone shrines, hunt lizards and eat goat heads. At the very least, those types tend to be more apathetic to foreigners than actively confrontational though.

It's interesting though, maybe IQ doesn't accurately measure intelligence, but it's rare that such a high IQ population is absolutely terrible at integrating at modern conditions. Mongolia is a strange place.

write english you nigger. But yes, obviously being poor sucks. That doesn't mean the flight of human capital makes your country better. Just look at all Africa: every brain goes to America. Same for Eastern EU and Germany. Even same here. Would be better if it was harder for them to leave. It's ungrateful when you have been educated by a country to abandon it

If you spend any time east of the Urals in your country there are parts that are not entirely dissimilar so it depends how well-travelled you are. For all its problems and its bleakness though I still think of it as one of the last remaining truly romantic countries. There really aren't many other places in the world like it - maybe Kazakhstan or Siberia. On the gelid, barren, windswept steppe you'll see the world at its most brutal and most sublime. There are rugged nomads, squalid shantytowns, soaring falcons, biting frosts, rotting carcasses and a horizon of infinite nothingness. In Ulaanbaatar, people are torn between that and post-soviet modernity but it all still exists in their psyche and outside the capital. One of my most memorable experiences has been driving for hours to the very middle of nowhere, getting out of the vehicle and seeing the flat, empty steppe reaching out to eternity around me. Just nothingness, a nothingness in the most absolute sense, stretching into the beyond. Go during early-mid spring when the frosts are milder and the midnight sun of the deep north starts to linger on the horizon and the night escapes away.
