Does the soul exist?

>> No.12487769

Depends on what you mean by "soul"

>> No.12487790

The soul exists, yes. In what form, I don't know. But I do know that a person has a soul to their personality, a person has that which encompasses their being and transcends their simple mind and instincts. The soul is that which is formed from the conflict between mans instincts and mans intellect.

I have. I'm interested in /lit/'s thoughts are on the existence of the soul/self and how they came to those conclusions.

Consciousness exists, amd because of its somewhat obscure nature it is what we know as the soul
I see it as a watering hole that never dries up but one day you get picked off at and you don't drink anymore
But the water is still there
Sin is pissing and shitting in the water
But the secret is the water is an eternal spring which can never really get dirty
But it is easier to sleep in clean sheets

I can’t really explain what I feel when I worship and love God. In that moment of enjoyment, I feel light, carefree, completely different from all other types of pleasures. Maybe this is only a result of some materialist component of the brain, I wouldn’t know, but it’s certainly unique and there doesn’t seem to be an explanation for it, so I’ll go along with the idea that we do have souls.

Even if I was atheist I would believe in the existence of the soul. Maybe that means I could never be atheist, but whatever. The soul is real and if you don't believe in soul power you are a bitch made nigger that sold his soul to Satan and you are probably gay as well.

Pretty much. English words like 'soul' and 'God' have a huge semantic range, and are often used to translate different foreign concepts too.

Yes, the soul/self is ultimate reality insofar as ultimate reality is in your head. Compare it to an extra-dimensional infinite set. It’s also sometimes called God, though things in themselves do not necessarily cease to be as a consequence of what I’ve said so far.

>> No.12488087

Materially, I don't think so. Spiritually, I very much feel so. I think belief in the soul helps me live a kinder, better, more fulfilled life. There's something about the idea, and the belief in the idea, that provides a larger, more meaningful perspective and a deeper, more emotionally honest means to express and understand our here.

There's no material reason why you are experiencing one animal and not another thing, or everything, or nothing. It's a profound realization if you can come back to it.

Could you expound this point? I'm not sure I get you. Also, what's your working definition of "soul"?

>> No.12488262

>>12488209
I may not have a great answer, but these are the questions that confuse me: Why is my experience of consciousness seated in this one otherwise random animal's cognition and perception? What is the "I" that has a situated perspective in the first place? Before I was alive there was supposedly nothing as far as my being; how does something come from nothing?

>> No.12488330

>>12488262
Those are some great questions. I don't know very much, but I can speak as I would to a friend with the purpose of sharing perspective. I'd like to think the "soul" or "consciousness" or the "I" (or are least what we perceive it to be), to mostly be a consequence of our biology, (and environment too, depending on the scope of the argument and definitions). Not necessarily a thing in and of itself, but a side effect that somehow seems to envelop and guide our existence.

>> No.12488643

>>12488262
I does not exist, something can’t come from nothing, but consciousness at the very least is interpreted by psychs to be the ego, which is like a pea in view of the unconscious. When you stare at the abyss, you’re staring at your unconscious, which contains a lot of repressed (not always negatively repressed) objects or maybe images or fantasies, or maybe anima/animus (divine feminine/masculine, everyone is bisexual). The issue is when you are overwhelmed by your unconscious, like a psychotic who’s life story is only recognizable after analyzing what his words are saying (a patient getting violent might say it “smells like vanilla” in which you have seconds to gtfo before he attacks you).

Z b when you want to punch somebody, it’s your fist that extends, not the “I”

“I” is probably more like a mouthpiece, like a spokesperson of being. Gurdjieff structured it like a horse carriage. The carriage is the body, the horses the emotions, the driver the intellect, the person inside the will. When the 4 are in agreement the will is utilized, but for the most part life just “happens” in a deterministic way or habitually.

>> No.12488685

>>12487983
I think the point is to stop pretending words like god and soul and spirit have any meaning. Specify exactly how they are being used or make new words. Obviously communication can't be perfect but it can be a hell of a lot better than insisting these words have meaning.

I have no doubt that my thoughts and actions are material products, but there is a "being" or "experiencing" at a transcendental level, something which processes all of those things as externals, and that Being is absolutely real. Probably the only thing at all that you can't dissuade me of is the existence of this Being, because I am never seperate from it and have never been.

>> No.12489194

>>12488755
I agree with this, I think material is a misleading word, the psychical and transcendental however are birds of the same feather, they both ‘outlast’ us. You are, are not a substance, but you view yourself as the material, the body, the carriage almost nearly all the time.
