What if they like to read about women being raped and killed?

>> No.12481382

Women are directly adapted to act as the nurses and educators of our early childhood, for the simple reason that they themselves are childish, foolish, and short-sighted — in a word, are big children all their lives, something intermediate between the child and the man, who is a man in the strict sense of the word. Consider how a young girl will toy day after day with a child, dance with it and sing to it; and then consider what a man, with the very best intentions in the world, could do in her place.
The nobler and more perfect a thing is, the later and slower is it in reaching maturity. Man reaches the maturity of his reasoning and mental faculties scarcely before he is eight-and-twenty; woman when she is eighteen; but hers is reason of very narrow limitations. This is why women remain children all their lives, for they always see only what is near at hand, cling to the present, take the appearance of a thing for reality, and prefer trifling matters to the most important. It is by virtue of man’s reasoning powers that he does not live in the present only, like the brute, but observes and ponders over the past and future; and from this spring discretion, care, and that anxiety which we so frequently notice in people. The advantages, as well as the disadvantages, that this entails, make woman, in consequence of her weaker reasoning powers, less of a partaker in them. Moreover, she is intellectually short-sighted, for although her intuitive understanding quickly perceives what is near to her, on the other hand her circle of vision is limited and does not embrace anything that is remote; hence everything that is absent or past, or in the future, affects women in a less degree than men. This is why they have greater inclination for extravagance, which sometimes borders on madness. Women in their hearts think that men are intended to earn money so that they may spend it, if possible during their husband’s lifetime, but at any rate after his death.

It's probably the one of the only books they've read that they weren't forced to read in school. You can tell someone hasn't actually read since graduating if you ask them about their favorite books and they say "um... Harry Potter". In a lot of cases it's less about genuine appreciation for the book than it is a panic-induced response that happens when they are asked about their non-existent reading habits and think that listing a children's novel is less embarrassing than just admitting that they don't read anything besides twitter posts.

Reading is funny.

It's like we've idealized the act of reading text such that virtually any instance of it is seen as sacrosanct. In no other field is it acceptable to run headlong into stagnation—refinement and improvement is always the goal, if not assumed to be the natural progression of things.

Like, fuck. If someone sat on their ass all day consuming vapid reality television, it's entirely reasonable to shame them into oblivion. The only times you witness bare minimum competency being encouraged is when middle-aged losers score deadend jobs at their local Mobil station (because, "well, at least he's working!") or when an anorexic teenager girl stuffs her face with Double Stufs and Flamin' Hot Cheetos ("she's eating, that's all that matters!").

That's okay as long as they don't pretend to be anything that they aren't. Historically it was always understood that not everyone was going to be an intellectual who spends their life reading and contemplating the meaning of things. It isn't a problem if you acknowledge that any society needs a certain amount of people who can just execute tasks without thinking too much about them. However, these people become insufferable when they try to claim that they understand more about complicated subjects than people who have spent years reading about them.

I think it's perfectly normal to have at least one "childhood favorite" in your top 10 books or whatever. Most people don't magically hate the things they read as a kid when they hit a certain age, they usually read those books to their own children and love the books all over again.

I don't think Harry Potter is good or bad for children, though, I think it is neutral. Some people, like Harold Bloom says, are "being trained to read Stephen King," and end up reading nothing but genre fiction. But other people read Harry Potter and actually do develop a love for literature and end up getting into classics later in life.

This is the go to defense for every adult Potter fanboy/girl when asked to justify their obsession of a children's book series. If "I like it because it's fun" is \your only reason for liking something, it means you suffer from ennui and have a nihilistic view of the world.
>>12481372
Sure, you had commodity fetishists like trekkies and Star Wars nerds since the 60's and 70's, but there is something particularly poignant that's expressed about our culture when an adult in their 30's still relishes over a children's book series, which hasn't been seen until the 21st century

To be the only person who actually answers OP’s question, here is the truth: women are creatures who top and main concern is social status, social points, and being collectivists. The surge in HP popularity came not with the end of the books, nor entirely with the end of the movies, but with the creation of a site called Pottermore. Basically a horoscope site that categorizes people into different HP house. Rowling also started tweeting more, casting herself as the perfect SJW and a feminist icon. It was here that the female fandom rose, it had all the ingredients: horoscopes, feminism, and the status of being a member of the HP fan club. I gurantee you that the majority of modern female HP fans did not grow up with the books, but became retroactive fans. Some of the more fanatic followers went back and actually read the books, to dive deeper into the lore.
