There was a quote from him where he talked about how if you never experienced love in high school that it will forever scar your mental psyche. Even if you figure shit out and manage to be date at an older age the fact you were a late bloomer will always be a part of you. Also he is French and the French have a long history of "if it's not offensive it's not art".

Houellebecq is a massive fan of Lovecraft. One of the first things Houellebecq published was a book of literary criticism on Lovecraft. He is absolutely fascinated by Lovecraft's extreme reactionary anti-liberal, anti-egalitarian and racist views.
Obviously, Houellebecq comes from a French tradition of the anti-revolutionary pro ancien regime, but his main inspiration is an American, HP Lovecraft.

he thought lovecraft was a pathetic cretin, you don't have to read between the lines to get that, using MH to justify your interest with some twerp's half-baked stories written in his mother's attic, Shirley Jackson is ten times the writer HP Sadboy ever dreamed to be, look at his sniveling expression, like he's afraid the camera's going to expose his frail weakness to all the world, which it did, "If if weren't for these greasy mulattos, spics, wops and niggers I'd be so great *sniff* it's just not fair." you are a bubbling, festering cauldron of delusion and ignorance, true ignorance, that is ignoring what is blatantly obvious.

"Sure. It’s been hopeless for a long time, from the very beginning. You will never represent, Raphael, a young girl’s erotic dream. You have to resign yourself to the inevitable; such things are not for you. It’s already too late, in any case. The sexual failure you’ve known since your adolescence, Raphael, the frustration that has followed you since the age of thirteen, will leave their indelible mark. Even supposing that you might have women in the future - which in all frankness I doubt - this will not be enough; nothing will ever be enough. You will always be an orphan to those adolescent loves you never knew. In you the wound is already deep; it will get deeper and deeper. An atrocious, unremitting bitterness will end up gripping your heart. For you there will be neither redemption nor deliverance. That’s how it is."

Shirley Jackson was a fat hausfrau. Her writings have inspired shit because she was shit. Lovecraft captures the imagination of generations and intellectuals, Jackson captures school board required readings.

Here is (one) answer to OP's question. A more elaborate one would be that shifts in hegemonic morality are Comtean logical shifts. Epistemic change is inevitable. With technology and capitalism as midwives of a new moral order, one which extended commodification into the sexual realm and transformed it into a marketplace, the distribution of sex and intimacy became radically more unequal. Individuals with low market value are rejected with a hitherto unseen ruthlessness in the contemporary sexual marketplace. Hence the "morbid symptoms", of which Houellebecq himself is one, but to be more specific (with reference to Atomised, The Possibility of an Island and Platform) - sexual ultraviolence (serial killers), an epidemic of loneliness, a dramatic increase in anxiety and depression, an increased likelihood of suicide among the aged, sex tourism, the rise of radical Islam, an spike in nihilistic sentiment among even ordinary people, sexual hypergamy, alienation as a result of self-consciousness of one's commodity status, open contempt of ugly people, lower birth rates, contempt for children, antipathy towards sentimentality and romance and fatalism among the intelligent. I think all of these are problems for Houellebecq.

He let his bitterness consume him. He probably never had the support of his family and never went on a journey of inner contemplation and realized that he was lied to, romantic relationships aren't everything that there is to life, and that not being in one does not diminish your value as a human being
