I can tell this was made by a person who hasn’t read any of the books they listed.

First, 4/6 of the introduction books are specifically about Capital, rather than Marx/Marxism in general. An Introduction by Michael Heinrich is *not* in-fact an actual introduction for the new reader, it’s an introduction to the New Marx Reading school of Interpretation, and unless you are already familiar with the standard English reading you will be totally lost.

The two generic introductions to Marx include a comic book and a book by an anti-Marxist. Peter Singer’s book is one of the worst ones you could suggest.


Next, four biographies, at least one of which is a critique of Marx (by Berlin). In English there is one standard best biography, and that’s by McLellan, which isn’t included. The Mehring is badly outdated and is widely considered as much myth as fact.

Taking up that much space with photographs of people who influenced Marx with no mentions of their writings is a pointless waste.

I wouldn’t have arranged the dialectical materialism section like that but it’s fine I guess.

The ‘extra’ section on the other hand is completely wild. I’m realizing here that this was made by a Trotskyist and is explicitly trying to be a Trotskyist guide.

The Marxist philosophy section is just a jumble of other important Marxist texts, rather than specifically about philosophy.

If you are a Marxist scholar you might want to read grundrisse but otherwise that’s all a bit much for an introduction.

The ‘Further’ section is completely off the rails. The first three are fine if you are making a Trotskyist list but Chomsky? Chomsky is an anti Marxist and anti communist. I still appreciate him but he had no place here. Then Zizek? Nobody who has read everything on this pic would be able to make heads or tails of Zizek without also reading some amount of Althusser, Freud, and Lacan. And finally, that book by Eagleton is an introduction for people who know nothing about Marx, not a capstone further reading.

Why do math books have such shit covers
It's not even that they have to be exceptionally well designed, it's math after all and you're not going to trick anyone into reading it, but at least make it so I don't get a headache looking at them.

Anybody have a recommendation for a book on studying books, preferably written before 1920? All the great writers did it, analytically taking notes as they read, focusing on specific techniques and picking things apart. Everything modern seems tinged with critical theory, or at least specifically geared toward literary critics (who are fags) and I'm not looking for a school, just a rational how-to-study and pick apart books. If not I'll just do it intuitively, but thought i'd brask. I've already read Adler (too much geared to non-fiction) so not Adler.

Why do this specifically? Some books don't require anything else, some should inspire you to ponder their words and look up what you don't understand. The difference is clear from your comprehension of what the author is trying to do. If it's not clear, you need to think about it more. You should adapt your process to the book, not follow guidelines like this.

You don't need Portrait for Ulysses, but I'd advise going Dubliners->Portrait->Ulysses->Finnegans just because they advance in difficulty, so if you say, find Portrait difficult you should wait to "level up" so to speak your reading abilities before moving on.
Same way I'd say for Woolf go Dalloway->Lighthouse->Waves
Too many people jump straight to Ulysses hearing its the "best", don't "get" it, get put off, and think it's impossible for anyone to do so.
Pic related has its own issues and dodgy placements, (War and Peace especially) but I think it's on the right track. Not to say entry-level is necessarily bad, Dosto is personal favourite and I'd agree he's beginner friendly.
"Entry level" shouldn't be thought of as an "elitist" term, but a tool to help people read.

Existential-ish writers like Dostoevsky are a good start (worked for me), for being both easy to appreciate and /lit/erary, but depends on your interest.
Try Crime and Punishment or Brothers Karamazov
Don't listen to anyone that tells you to start with the Greeks or difficult modernist writers, because you'll likely give up and go straight back to vidya.
Try it by all means, but don't think just because you don't get the deal with Agamemnon that lit isn't for you.

I made a point to only include books I've read (minus the one GR book) and I've only read one strict CS book (plus currently reading an information theory book). I didn't find the CS book too useful for me honestly as my background is math and I mostly need to know practical programming for my field - hence the included books are mostly programming. I do intend to read SICP and some Godel stuff later on, maybe if I update the list more after I'll add them.

This is meme shit, don't even think about it. You will naturally speed up with experience, as your brain learns to recognise patterns in the words, but there's no shortcut for this.
Just process the words until you understand them. Make sure that when you read a page, you have some understanding of what the author is trying to say or do.
If you don't "get" it even after trying, put the book down and come back to it later (maybe much later).

As someone who has skimread from a young age, yes, but not so much for reading literature.
Most things of literary value need time to be comprehended.
On the other hand, writing that follows very familiar patterns (cliches perhaps), information already halfway familiar to you, with little quality to savour in the prose - yes, I can read through those very fast and retain the important bits thanks to skim reading.
It's useful to filter what you want from text like simple (usually genre) fiction, wikipedia articles and internet comments. Not for dense information.
