I'll help you friend: a syllable is basically a unit of speech that we consider one sound. So look for how many vowel sounds are isolated when pronouncing a word. Take the word "syllable", it is pronounced sill-uh-bull, three distinct vowel sounds, three syllables. The only tricky thing is that combinations of vowels still count as one sound. Like the word "sound", we are combining two vowels making one syllable.

Try holding your hand under your chin and see how many times it moves down, this is a good rule of thumb. Notice that when you say the word "sound" you only make one (major) movement down. This is actually much harder to explain then I thought wow.
