What's more important: to read or to discuss what you read?

I spend about 8 daily hours on /lit/ and a few selected subreddits meanwhile reading only 2 hours or so.

I'm starting to consider whether I should read more and post less. Do you think that makes sense?

Not him, but as long as you stick to more niche subs, it's really not a bad place for discussion. It's the larger, more popular subs with easy to participate hobbies that tend to be a flaming cesspit. And I promise I've been on 4chan and the Internet longer than you.

I think it depends on the genre, but discussion is what really helps solidify ideas in a book. It isn't the only avenue, you can have a discussion yourself by asking questions to yourself and coming down with answers. If you think you absorb the ideas just fine, then it may not be helpful, but discussion can help it stay with you longer.

Unless you are on r/funny or any subreddits like that you’re fine. A lot of times because of the nature of the subreddit and often close-knit relationships in them, they can be a good place to discuss more obscure media.

Posting on /lit/ is not discussing literature. It is a guilty pleasure that is minimally destructive but a total waste of time. I see it as stuffing a dildo up my ass, or dressing in women's clothing and prancing around the apartment.

It depends what you want out of your reading. Do you want to pass time, relax, and enjoy a good book? Or do you want to learn how to read, think, and write about those books?

This. Discussing books can be incredibly rewarding but you’re not going to get that from /lit/ except in very very rare cases. I really wish I had friends to talk about books with.

You don’t get real discussion about books online, it’s just shitposting.

Further, you can’t discuss books you haven’t read. Spend your time reading and find an IRL place to talk about books if you can.

the more widely you read and the more lit crit or history of art you read the better the lit discussion. you may as well write essays for yourself instead of posting on here or reddit. no one here will tell you discussing symbolism is a waste of time
