I'm new to /lit/ (I've mostly been an /a/sshole or /v/ermin till now) but I've read books all my life because I enjoy them and take great pleasure and relaxation from finishing a book. Yet here people seem more concerned with philosophy, intellect or escaping from "SJW" politics. What was the last book you read because of a striking cover, or a captivating blurb or even just for the hell of it?

The meme trilogy is actually really fun to read even if you don't know much deep allusions

Almost everything I read. I'm too far in my /lit/ adventure to force myself to read something because I "should". If I read a philosophy book, it's because I'm interested in it.

That said, I am reading Walden and it has been a bit dull so far due to Thoreau's philosophy having been diluted through more modern philosophers and self-help gurus ad nauseum so I'm at least passingly familiar with his stances on self-sufficiency and personal improvement. It's not that I necessarily disagree with his philosophy, it's that I was already on the same page as him on most of the subjects he discusses long before I ever cracked these covers. Engaging with ideas you've already considered and mostly agree with is not the most intellectually enlivening exercise. I went in more interested in the nature observations than his philosophy anyway so I'm hoping those sections will be more interesting. Everything else I'm reading is entertaining.

Like... all of them? The 'start with the greeks' shit is an incel meme my dude, just get among some books you find interesting, engage in the storytelling and you'll find some gems.
