I don't really know what I think because I haven't made up my mind, but I definitely don't find the common definitions you seem to support persuasive for apparent reasons. I think more than anything this inability for words like man and woman to function as intended around the fringes (intersex, etc.; unrelated to however small these fringe populations are) shows that these words are incomplete at least to some degree. For this reason I think its silly to be so attached such an incomplete word as "woman" to the point that we can't let it's definition change (even though it has already changed in the past).

I wouldn't say I disagree with you anon, but I feel that your statement could use a little tweaking.

A language molds to suit the needs of it's users. This molding is an on-going process. The discovery of chromosomes and the highlighting of transgender issues could be said to be fairly recent developments. Rather than say language has not evolved properly I think it would be more accurate to say that it has not evolved yet. Rather the need for a change has only recently arose.

The way things are heading at the moment, I think that the words "Man" and "Woman" are going to go the same way as the word "key". A concierge at a hotel will hand you your "key" when you check in but in almost all modern hotels it is not an actual "key" so to speak, it is an electronic "key"-card. Over time the word expanded (or adapted) to encompass electronic keys.

What do you think?

Plato has a great analogy for this.

Plato compares the art of cooking to the science of medicine. What is medicine concerned with? The actual body and how to actually help it, which ultimately feels good (unless you’re a tripfag). Cooking on the other hand, is a semblance. It makes you feel good, and it looks good, but as far as actually helping the actual body, it can either make nutrients palatable, or it can actually do damage, though it maintains the good feeling either way.

Traps are the same. They create a semblance of femininity, that looks good and can make for a good fap or trip through south east Asia, but in the end, when you’re sitting in jail with an STD, you’ll be going:

>I guess I should’ve started with the Greeks... fuck.

>if it was discovered it would mean that it was lying in wait for us to pick it up and use it.
This is exactly what I meant. As man rose into being they slowly discovered which sounds (along with all other sorts of communications) invoke which ideas within the minds of their peers and themselves. With this discovery followed new innovation and eventually society as we know it, which would be undeniably impossible without this sort of communication.
>we've yet to master it
I think this is pretty self-evidently true. Until I'm able to empty the contents of my mind into yours with one well-chosen word, our ability to language falls far short of perfected.
>language seems to be a sort of collective invention that is constantly being innovated upon
This seems either too optimistic or simply naive. We don't make language up and adjust as we go, we feel things out until we arrive upon what works until what works fails and we must go looking again. Language sprouts out of interaction with the world, not out of a collective putting-together of words out of nothing.

On your first point, your theory fails to account for the fact that there are many languages, not one singular language. The sounds of these languages varie wildly and the same referent can sound completely different from language to language. Even within a singular language there can be multiple dialects and accents, these too can sound completely different despite having the same referent. I believe your idea that sound matters in language beyond aesthetic reasons is not very well thought out.

Secondly, this idea is far beyond the scope of language as it is the combining of words that allow us to derive deeper meaning.

I would agree that I am naive but that doesn't mean I am incorrect. I agree that language works by feeling things out, but the world is not the let factor in this process, interactions between people is the driving force.

But of a rushed reply I'm short on time, if this thread is still up later we can have a real conversation.

>there are many languages, not one singular language. The sounds of these languages vary wildly and the same referent can sound completely different from language to language.
I don't think this point is incompatible with mine. Any utterance of verbal language or a waving of your hands or whatever sort of particularity of communication you choose is inconsequential to my general point. This point being that what actually gets a point across is discovered. If something is conveyed well with one particular language then it is just as likely to be conveyed well by another, because the particularities of the language itself (spoken sounds, spelling, characters, dialects, etc.) are secondary to the actualization of ideas within the orator and audience (and more broadly their environment).
>it is the combining of words that allow us to derive deeper meaning.
This is not necessarily true. One concise word can possibly reveal more than any number of unconcise words. To say this is impossible is saying too much with too much confidence.
>interactions between people is the driving force.
I don't think I've disagreed with this. I'd add though that it's not just interactions between people but interactions between everything. What I disagree with is the idea of a collective putting-together of words out of nothing (an invention; our personal creation), which this isn't.

Anyways I'm sleep now maybe we'll pick this up later.
