Obviously, travel is a pleb genre, but have any travelers ever risen above their station and written anything worth reading?

No but Conrad was a great traveler, and couldn't have written a single page if he hadn't been, so the image is appropriate.

Many if not most great authors have traveled extensively D.H. Lawrence, R.L. Stevenson, Byron, et al), but I assume OP means has anyone established himself first as a traveler, and then written anything worth reading. Many authors spring to mind:
T.E. Lawrence (Seven Pillars of Wisdom)
Wilfred Thesiger (Arabian Sands)
Gavin Maxwell (Ring of Bright Water)
Paul Bowles (The Sheltering Sky, Let It Come Down, etc.)
Farley Mowat (The Farfarers, People of the Deer, etc.)

Those are all worth reading but whether they have literary merit is a matter of opinion.

Is there a bunch of newfags on discord collectively deciding to namefag or something?
It's fucking stupid, try being an interesting and people will remember you from your posting habits alone(or at least it used to be like this when this board was slower and had more good posters), otherwise just be happy with being anonymous.
