Forgive the abysmally small collection, /lit. I'm only now getting into literature as a means of entertainment, and I gift the majority of my finished books to my younger brother.

Honestly, I see no reason to hold onto as many books as a lot of these people. If I like a book, I probably know someone else who will like it. I've already read it, so I give it to them. If I feel the need to read it again the future, I buy another copy, which I'll probably give away again. The only books anyone really needs to hold onto are reference books.

The only thing that bothers me about these threads is when people post an ebook reader.

Yes, it was kinda funny the first time. We get it. It's not funny or clever anymore.

And now it happens multiple times in a thread. Like: 'oh, well, I know someone has already done it in this thread, but maybe nobody noticed, hurp derp'

This is the saddest thread I've ever seen. Such a pathetic display of ego. Like you NEED your friends or whomever to see all your books and be like 'Whoa man, so many books, you're DEEP.'

For god's sake I've bought a few thousand books over the years and currently own just five because I loaned out and/or sold the rest. Just read 'em and move on. damn packrats

>> No.1240860

>>1240841
I don't think this is the case at all. People like to share things they love, hence this thread.
I think that sharing and re-reading books is more than enough reason to keep them. I give books away sometimes, but mainly new copies; I share and loan out books ALL the time.

No, I didn't post in this thread.

But it's one anon sharing with another anon without any context whatsoever. I'm supposed to think x book is good because some random yahoo on the internet has it on his shelf? It's not the same as a close friend giving me a book and saying "Here, I think you'll really like this."
Do you not understand how silly this all seems? It just seems to be an excuse for people to show off their collections for no reason whatsoever than to simply show off. Meh, whatever I've never really gotten the whole packrat mentality and probably never will. Different strokes I suppose

>> No.1240883

>>1240841
I kind of agree, but then again I don't. I keep books I enjoyed, but I don't mind loaning them out knowing they might never get returned. I like having the book in my possession, so that if conversation strikes about a particular book I can refer to it, or even loan or possibly give it to someone if they've shown interest or I feel they need to read it.

In other words, I like to keep my books, but I don't mind giving it away.

If it's like a favorite though, bitches better return that shit. I wouldn't give away books I've bought that were valuable or really nice copies or something.

>> No.1240890

>>1240873
I know what you mean. I guess it's more about saying, 'hey, this is what I'm into, what are you into?' and connecting over recognised books.
Or hating one another over recognised books. Some of it is undoubtedly ego-motivated, but some of it may just be genuine sharing.

Anyway, that's how I prefer to interpret each post - as somebody saying, 'This is what I love! Do you want to see?' rather than, 'hey lol check my shelves lol i have read house of leaves lyk nine times alreddy!.'

Also: confirmed packrat 4lyf.
