He does have a serious anal fetish. Remember that line where he talked about fondling "the orb of her anus?" That freaked me out.

Honestly, though, for a significant segment of the population sex is what's worth reading about. It's universal between people of every country. It's taboo in every country. Literature is the only place that it's really ok to be frank about sex.

He writes beautiful stories. I wouldn't call him overrated.

God I hate people who label anything that takes itself serious and tries to have literary merit and symbolism and things like that as "pretentious".

It's like, shit, what do you expect, pop fiction?

C22 is a rollercoaster ride, if you're only sixty pages in and mad because you can't understand it, stop reading so slow and let it take you places, it actually makes far more sense that way, anyway.

Plus, it's fucking hilarious if you put yourself in the right mindset. A lot of people expect books to just magically bend around their personality when, in fact, reading is as much of an art as writing. If you don't try to read something right, you're not giving it a chance, and you'll never appreciate it.

If you don't like appreciating things and you prefer tearing them to pieces first chance and calling them overrated, then go ahead. Have fun not enjoying things.

Milan Kundera's Life is Elsewhere.

Halfway through the book, I realised that I really didn't give a fuck about any of the characters. I didn't even want to know what will happen to them.

I finished the book anyway, and it was such a friggin waste of time. Yeah, Kundera may have a way with words, but the story failed to interest me.

If nobody advocated Shakespeare or other classical literature to people in schools, who the fuck would ever ass themselves to look into it on their own?

I fucking loved reading Hamlet in school. It's an excellent work. That said, it's not something I would have gotten around to checking out for a very long time on my own, because I don't have all that much interest in theatre. Even then, my "I'll get around to it" attitude would only be there because I'm, a bibliophile, the standard student would never bother with Shakespeare at all if it were left up to their own volition.

I had a friend who started reading The Tempest and The Twelfth Night for fun after we covered Shakespeare. Most people don't go to plays very often, and movie adaptations tend towards terrible. I don't think reading them in screenplay form is a bad thing, the only boring part for me was reading the boring plays (ex. Much Ado About Nothing fucking happening at all).

I can never get through Shakespeare's comedies. I think I just don't get most of the humor. I vastly prefer seeing the plays acted out though (and I've quite enjoyed the films) to reading them, however, and I can see exactly how his universal acclaim among high school teachers might be at least in part responsible for the lack of enthusiasm about going to the performances. I don't think Shakespeare is overrated at all, but I do think that the class time could be better spent dealing with something that was meant to be enjoyed as words on a page.
