I finished that series last week and it was nothing spectacular. Like every other SF book, it presents a few interesting concepts (mostly in book 2) wrapped in boring exposition, pseudo procedural political or military burocracy and literal anime tier tropes.
Throughtout the series, the guy is obsessed with problem solving, the scale of stuff and inspiring gestures of courage or creativity by a few naive or special individuals (literal Mary Sues).
In particular I hated all the long parts where this STEMfag chink tried to write descriptive prose about nature, beauty or romance. It was laughably bad, like an autist from /sci/ trying to write poetry.

The fact one of the characters, a fictional ex president of the US, quotes Legend of the Galactic Heroes in the middle of a dialogue should give you an idea of what sort of book to expect.

He should've stuck with the structure of the first book (short chapters, few PoVs), but no, he had to reinvent the fucking wheel in book 2. Book 3 is all over the place.

And another thing. All the technobabble was sloppy and inconsistent. I don't get why a scifi author would spend dozens of pages explaining current time Physics theories (like electromagnetic radio transmissions), obviously trying to give his plotting some credibility, and then introduce huge technological and scientific leaps with nothing resembling a brief definition (neutrino radio transmissions).

>> No.12400920

>>12400852
Eh, neither neutrino or gravitation based interstellar communication is a new idea. I assume the author did not want to speculate to much in regards to technology that is not 100% fantasy. Unlike his particle folding and dimension fuckery.

Imagine I wrote a SF book about transportation.
Because I know about steam engines, I wrote 80 pages describing in detail the physical principle and the manufacturing methods.
Then fast forward 50 years, I mention combustion engines. I don't know shit about them but I have the owner's manual of my Ford F150 which briefly describes the engine, so I copy paste 2 or 3 paragraphs to make it sound like a feasible technology.
50 years later I mention in passing those trains that use magnets, and 30 years later I introduce warp engines without even an explanation. Then a ship using warp engine observed a supernova and the science officer in the ship explains for 3 pages what they just saw.

That's almost what this Chinese autist did. The balance between educated and speculative exposition was all over the place and it hijacked the narrative for no apparent reason.
And then, in the middle of this autist's wet dream, characters are able to communicate complex thoughts and carry on dialogue exchanges using only their fucking eyes. Because it's poetic and profound, lol.

I swear I will never understand what people like about science fiction like this.

Anybody read Kings of the Wyld? I’m about a quarter of the way through and it’s not bad. The prose aren’t anything to write home about and the author has a habit of overusing parentheses to go back and contradict a character’s precious thoughts as a joke. But the world building is decent, the plot is serviceable, and I like the central premise of getting a group of legendary mercenaries back together for one last mission; even if the author takes the whole “band” metaphor to far.

Wuxia fans, what have you been reading, what do you recommend, what should people avoid?

Currently reading Renegade Immortal, it's pretty epic so far.

Desolate Era is good.

I Shall Seal the Heavens is ok.

Coiling Dragon is meh.

Magus of the Warlock World is trash, it's a shame because the translation probably has the best prose of any wuxia I've read and the MC is red pilled as fuck but everything else is dogshit.

I hated that fucking AI chip in WMW, pissed me off with how blatantly op it was. The writer uses it as a crutch to solve every single problem the MC runs into. MCs entire prowess as a scientist is asking the AI chip to solve problems for him.

Definitely check out Desolate Era and Renegade Immortal though.

Desolate Era is good for the first 70% and reaches god tier in the last 25-30%.

Haven't finished RI but I can already tell it's a cut above most other wuxias. The MCs character for one isn't static, it changes with his experiences, there's actual progression in the way he thinks and acts. The first 15% or so is a little hard to get through because of this, at least it was for me since I assumed that was how the MC was going to be for the rest of the series but the writer surprised me and there's actual character progression and more importantly in hindsight everything makes sense as to why I found the MC to be unlikable.

This was recommended to me multiple times by various people and whenever any mention of wuxia would come out it was nearly always recommended. I downloaded the epubs for this to read on my kindle. Managed to read the first 3 books Meng had just escaped the rebirth cave and had teleported to the black lands

Are the others similar? I disliked it immensely after the first book. He went from using his wits and being somewhat humble to a gary stu after 75% of the first book and reading a story about a guy who will always wins got boring quick. I also found the rate a which he gained power really poorly planned out.

Yes, ISSTH in a way is the archetype for most wuxia novels. MC's almost never losing and being Gary Stus is a given in most of them and wish fulfilment storylines are sort of the point of these things BUT other wuxia novels handle these aspects better than ISSTH does. If you dislike the the core principles then wuxia just isn't for you.
If you want to give another wuxia a chance, I've already recommended Desolate Era and Renegade Immortal, both are a lot more serious than ISSTH. Renegade Immortal is incidentally written by the same author that wrote ISSTH.
If you liked the comedic aspect of ISSTH you can also try A Will Eternal which is ongoing and currently very popular.

>>12408898
It will scratch the Lotr itch but don't expect the same quality, even as someone who likes the books I can tell you large parts of the series is extremely sloggy and heavy on world building without the plot advancing but usually the pay-offs after the slog are worth it. If you like reading for the sake of reading and like getting lost in the world being created I'd say you'll like.
There are a large cast of characters and you will love some of them and absolutely detest some others.
Also, to note, the first book in particular even though it's one of the weaker books in the series is written in a very Lotr-esque manner(heavily inspired by fellowship of the ring) and Jordan admitted he intentionally wrote it in such a way to get published back in the day.

I prefer to listen (audible) to first person or single PoV fantasy books.

I've listened to almost all the recommended fantasy that has PoV.

Red rising Series
Name of the wind
Blood Song
Street Rats of Aramoor
Dark King Tidings (hated this self-insert fantasy)
Dresden Files (got bored at book 3, heard it gets better)

I've listened to more but can't think of them top of my head. Anyone have any other recommendations? I'm interested in Rage of Dragons by Evan Winter but it's not available in audiobook format. I personally emailed him and he said sometime 2019 spring.

Joel Shepherd's Spiral Wars series is ostensibly a action/space opera series, but a lot of it actually involves the characters having to maneuver through alien political landscapes to get stuff done and find allies.

Some of the Vorkosigan books are fairly politics heavy since the main character is a space-nobleman who's best friend is the emperor, his father is the former regent/prime minister, etc, and obviously he has to deal with stuff involving his family lands and government at times.

Anything with worldbuilding where quirks are grounded in the world's reality? for example i really liked how in stormlight archives gambling is prohibited because there once was a rebellion based on a prophecy and now all forms of forecast are illegal yet they still find loopholes to gable without there being a chance involved and because figuring out the weather is the most important thing for them. Retail means that it's ripped from an ebook source such as overdrive or amazon: what you get is the same as what you'd get if you bought it. A normal epub could be a book scan or an altered retail copy. On a tracker like bibliotik, retail has different stipulations, for example no modified metadata (for example bookmarks or anything added by calibre by opening the file), it can't have been converted/edited/cover art added/ripped by someone other than you etc.

Don't know what copy to pick? Get the retail. Also I'd get stuff off either private trackers (MAM, Bibliotik) or Mobilism before I touch the IRC. This is because the IRC tends to have a lot of weirdly OCR'd stuff floating around.
