I haven't read any of the spanish translations but I would go with those anyway since the laguages are so similar. The english version that I have read was pretty ok.

He is. Machado's short stories are better but Rosa's masterpiece is far above Dom Casmurro or Bras Cubas.
Also, Quincas Borba was quite bad, it felt like a telenovella.
