There's like a million different versions, which one do you guys like?

>> No.12383521

I use the WEB version for posts because it's public domain. I read the NAMBRE because I'm not a Schismatic or Apostate

KJV is the most literary

i tried the NKJV audiobook but it was boring

Douay Rheims. The language is just as beautiful as the KJV but it contains all 72 books in order and isn’t a loosely translated piece of Protestant propaganda.

That's the Jehovah's Witnesses' translation, so no.

NRSV is decent, but it's not particularly popular among Catholics. Are you thinking of the RSV-2CE?

>> No.12384419

if KJV seems too archaic, try ESV. readable but not as annoying a modernization as others, like the NIV, blegh

It depends entirely on what your purpose in reading the Bible is.

That being said I'm getting very annoyed of these "what's the best translation" threads. Surely you can Google this?

Also one of the more inaccurate, unfortunately.

NASB is one of most accurate English translations, and reads the best, I think. ESV, too.

NLT is written more like a modern novel, but loses a bit of accuracy. Still, simple read, though.

I recommend picking an English version and popping open a lexicon and going word by word through a book, looking at Hebrew and Greek words. Tremendously fascinating and gives you a whole new understanding and appreciation for just how impressive it is.

Read The Secret Teachings of All Ages by Manly P. Hall or you literally won't get anything out of it though. The Bible is highly symbolic and reading it literally is worse than not reading it at all.

It might be a regional issue. I can't speak for the English-speaking Catholic Church in general, but I was raised in New England in Catholic schools and the NRSV was so common nobody questioned it. Of course, New England was patient-zero of the child-molestation cult so maybe we're not a great model for the Catholic Church in general. Also, I'm a suicidal atheist so maybe I shouldn't weigh in at all.

At least read Alter for genesis. Really changed my understanding of the book

I bumped into a Freemason KJV Bible a few days ago and I'm sad I didn't buy it. Nice compass on the front cover, and discussion of King Solomon's Temple etc., and discussion of major Biblical lines in relation to Masonic ritual
