Many of these libraries are not good because they have huge wide open spaces where noise is everywhere. My dream library would be one with many small silent rooms and secluded places.

How's UCL?

Carnegie Library at SU was great. No good pics online. But the shelves were very cozy with spiral staircases. The main room was an open layout but it had quiet 24/7 policy, while the main library Bird, was bigger but had much more going on at any time. Really wish I had taken some pics while I was a student.

While I understand why they have it, I feel it would be much better without glass separating the gangways and the big open inner space. A small iron balustrade would be better, although aesthetically speaking there should be no barrier at all.

I don't know an awful lot about St Andrews so take my word with a pinch of salt, but I'd probably still say UCL. When I was there it was the top English department in the country; idk if it still is, but it surely maintains a higher standard than St Andrews. The poz at UCL is obnoxious but if you can tune it out the classes are good. And if you go to UCL and find you hate it, there's still London to divert you. If you go to St Andrews and find you hate it, there's ... what exactly?

Went to KCL, Maughan is indeed a nice library... wish I had gone to St Andrews when I had the chance though.

Reading Sherlock Holmes stories in the UCL library on a visitor's pass was comfortable as hell. Jeremy Bentham's stuffed corpse definitely adds to the Victorian atmosphere, weirdly enough.

It wasn't originally so, university Heidelberg library was opened in 14th century, therefore its exterior looks so. But the interior fell victim to several 'modernization' attempts in mid 20th century.
