12380727 No.12380727 [Reply] [Original]

>Upon opening paper 1 of the Higher School Certificate on Monday, students were faced with an analytical question on Indigenous writer Ellen van Neerven's poem Mango. The work, found in the book Comfort Food, appears to have frustrated many students and van Neerven has worn that frustration in the form of vulgar online abuse — even death threats. "We were asked to analyse your mango f****d poem — and I'm asking what the f***k was the point of your mango bullshit?" one student said in a direct Facebook message to van Neerven. "In all honesty there wasn't much to analyse cos it reads like a 4-year-old wrote it," another said.

What the actual fuck is wrong with Australians?

It was a shit poem but also this is a country full of the most creatively braindead humans to exist on the planet. Middle class tradies and accountants, as far as the eye can say, raising entitled brats with no empathy or drive to recognise the sublime

Half of "The Lucky Country" was about how our resource surplus and isolation will turn us into mindless mining robots, well this is the result

Have you read the poem you faggot?
I took this exam (graduated with highest band) and the """poem""" was absolute garbage.
The only reason they put it in there is because it was written by an abo and the government needed to virtue signal.
You're clearly a leftist faggot as well.

You're clearly some leftist trying to defend a shitty poem just because it was written by an abo.

No this poem is absolute garbage.
In the same exam, we wrote an essay on T.S. Eliot's poems.
Compare the two and maybe you'll see where I'm coming from.

Idk what the question was but all you would need to do is write about how the poem’s title and style reflect the way memory works when the author hears/sees the word mango...this appears to be a poem of that nature. Images brought about upon seeing/eating a mango. Literally all you would have to do to get more points is connect it to Proust’s In Search of Lost Time and probably get top marks.

Agreed.
More trying to say that I think the exams should be providing a cultured education (e.g. teaching T.S. Eliot and Shakespeare, analysing classical art etc.) rather than giving kids bottom of the barrel poems just because they were written by an aboriginal.

Imagine being so bent out of shape about this poem you don't just write about the obvious sex metaphor she's trying to draw

It's in there because it's so overt. It is supposed to be a simple poem so the kids can make a simple and relevant critique. These kids are so fucking dumb they can't do that, and so entitled they still complain about it.

The only line really suggesting something like this is "some have never had one" and the fact that she's a girl seemingly alone with boys. The idea that this was 'overtly' sexual at 8 years old is you reading in to it and assuming that the poetry is really supposed to be representative of something else more 'mature' that its subject, which is her childhood memory.

I mean, if it IS a sexual metaphor, then why? What is this supposed to show about sexuality aside from the possibility of it being part of the budding of puberty for her?

Not him, but they're eating mangoes.

Even actively seeking sexual metaphor, it doesn't really strike me that way, just as as image of a nostalgic childhood memory.

Also I don't really think they'd put a poem about an 8 year old getting gangbanged in a river with slapping water and dripping chins into a school exam.

The lines from the dog one down seem to indicate a sexual experience culminating in the orgasm of clouds breaking. The finale line indicates how men forget the humanity of women when using them as a sexual object. It seems to me to be about the transition from childhood innocence to the period of sexual development. I still wouldn’t call it a great poem, but it’s not like they put Rupi Kaur on the test.

You're all retards if you're not trolling. "dripping chins" is obviously talking about the boys' chins unless there are more girls there or they're blowing each other, and "listen to the taste" only makes sense from her perspective listening to the sounds of the boys eating. Even if we are to interpret the mango 'metaphorically' as a symbol of virginity or whatever, it makes no more sense and sheds no more light on her supposed experience. I mean, what's the point of the dog, or the 'mud' then? Is this supposed to be just like my Japanese hentai manga? I think you just suck at reading poetry and don't see how full of concrete detail and imagery that completely goes against you narrative there actually is.

the lubras were fucked by every white man who ever landed in the first hundred years of colonisation, so there's literally hundreds of thousands of people who can claim a tiny fraction of Aboriginal descent. i worked with a guy who was 1/64th Aboriginal, and he looked whiter than Benedict Cumberbatch. he also got a pretty decent regular payment from the government on top of what he earned.

it's a joke. i could claim to be part Aboriginal simply from living in Carrum Downs.

you've never hung out with "professional" poets, have you? they walk a minefield as dangerous as any of Stalin's contemporaries. one wrong word and you're dead. poems about 8-year-olds getting gang-banged are, oddly enough, politically safe, because nobody dares criticise them. except the students, who don't have any skin in that game.
