I can recommend Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser if you want characters that feel a bit more real than the normal stuff. Their adventures are genuinely pretty creative and Lieber is really good at subtle foreshadowing. Lean Times in Lankhmar is probably the perfect example of that.

Also, Zelaznys first Chronicles of Amber is pretty great. The second Chronicles is a bit more meh, but I enjoyed it. Its like a subgenre shift from hard boiled detective to cyberpunk, which someone people disliked.

Wolfe uses a lot of technically-English but very rare/archaic words as part of "world building" in BotNS: this works partly by archaism, partly by defamiliarization, and partly by subtle differences in the meaning of these words from "normal" English terms. This wouldn't be impossible to replicate in another language but it would be unusually demanding on the translator.

You should probably stick to the English version.

/pol/ users don't exist in a vacuum. /pol/ users like things. When they go to discuss the things they like, on a board dedicated to the things they like, they do not shed their political opinions at the door.

So when they're in a thread and some other poster brings up politics and a /pol/ user gives his two cents and you see this, you get butthurt. After making a couple of posts that add nothing to the discussion other than >>>/pol/ >>>/pol/ >>>/pol/, when you go to /qa/ and whine for hirohito to delete /pol/, you're not asking him to delete /pol/. You're asking him to ban opinions you don't agree with.

You see that's the thing with leftism, it can only exist in a highly moderated space. It cannot hold its own with total free speech. That is precisely why /pol/ belongs on 4chan and you don't.

It has many many faults, like how almost every character is one dimensional, but it's quite entertaining. The scale of it all makes it very unpredictable.
It's like the author knew about "show not tell" """"rule"""" in writing, but had no taste to discern when to tell and when to show. As a result, the attempts at poetry are retarded. Maybe a Chink STEMfag can't into lyricism. For example, characters would embrace or look at a picture and feel 3 different but compatible emotions, followed by the end of the chapter. In contrast, a guy has to explain some scientific mambo jumbo? You need to paint the picture on these super crazy structures? Cool, let's write non stop for 5 pages about it.

He writes simple prose, but story telling and plot is not bad, he is better than most contemporary scifi authors. If you are ok with that then you will like him. Read previous books, Commonwealth Saga, Night Down trilogy.

What makes Salvation bad? It appears that the whole point of the book, the story, the plot is to use it all to push diversity and have an excuse to come up with most ridiculous gender fluid pronouns.

>C. L. Moore created Jirel, ruler of Joiry, in reaction to the beefy total-testosterone blood-and-thunder tales of '30s pulp magazines, but Jirel is no anti-Conan. She's a good Catholic girl, stubbornly purposeful, relentless in pursuit of enemies or vengeance, hard-boiled and a little stupid, and cannot be distracted by mere physical attractiveness. Indeed, in Jirel's world, beauty = decadence = corruption. Were these stories written today, inevitably Jirel would have a lot of hot sex, but as they were first published in Weird Tales between 1934-1939, sexual attraction is mostly only vividly implied. It wasn't a bomb as much as it was a kind of anti-matter weapon that set off a chain reaction with the planet itself. Also they echoed the "gate is down" plan pulled from the earlier training to do it.

So we had foreshadowing and payoff while exploring a character who was being stressed to his breaking point to meet the expectations he was under.

The pay off was of the foreshadowing of the "gate is down" bit that they employed the previous time they were basically screwed belong belief. The training exercises were simulated space battles with the students acting as ships. The entire thing was to train someone to handle the rigors of command and lead a fleet of ships into enemy territory and get the before they got us. Those war games were then mirrored by the latter portion of the book, concluding with mirroring that desperate tactic to win by taking the enemy gate before they got wiped out.

Seriously, between your misunderstanding about the Little Doctor (which was a gun, not a bomb, they were fighting in space, not making bombing runs on planetary installations for most of the book) and failure to understand how foreshadowing works I'm not surprised you don't like the book. Not really. Shogun is great, being only loosely inspired by historical events. I also really enjoyed Cloud of Sparrows and Autumn Bridge, which are more historical.

The closest is probably Lian Hearne's Tales of the Otori. It's a fantasy version of Japan and can be pretty violent at times, also incredibly depressing as well because it's very much a tragedy. The original trilogy was pretty decent, as was the prequel novel. I never got around to reading the sequel novel though.

Pattern Recognition by Gibson, while not strictly sci-fi, is probably still one of the few novels that actually try weave the internet as an integral part of the story and it came out already in 2003. I always felt the magic in Tales of the Otori was introduced badly. I gave up on them as a teenager because the main character was, with zero training, doing a power the readers had only vaguely heard about and it was a key part of the plan. IIRC there was even one power you found out about because he used it, even though he himself only found out he had powers at all recently. So there was at least one awakening moment or teaching conversation with a master missing, that was really jarring.

Flavour anon, you were told years ago. You edit a book WHEN you are finished with your draft. No wonder you don't have no progress if you write one chapter then spend two months editing it.

You just write until you think your story is done, no reading what you have before, just write. THEN read through what you wrote, then read again and start organizing your words to match how you want events to take place, check for logical consistency, grammatical errors, all the while adding in and subtracting.

Writing a novel isn't the hard part, it's the editing that comes afterwards that sucks the life out of you. You will have reread that draft so many times that you will dream of it. If you think you should change something make a new word document and name it alternate chapters, and put any changes you have in there. You write everyday even if it's shit. You don't go back the next day to edit your shit, you move on.

Can't believe I'm doing this, but this is how you should plan:
>think about what you want to write
>think about what you want to happen
>think about where you want things to happen / you want characters to go
>what you want your characters to do
>who are your characters
>any special conflicts you want
>how much rape and incest you will tastefully add
>anything special about the world
>what's your beginning, starting, middle, and end
>if you are using magic or tech make notes of the basics so your readers won't call you a deus ex machina hack
Put all of this in a word document and label it basic info. You can add more pertinent information to it anytime, and it will function as your consistency check. You will have a loose guideline to follow.
If you wanna write something else, go ahead, but follow the above. So if you got your other story out of your system, you can reread the basic info again for your other project and continue like nothing happened.

I don't want to see no whining about editing from you for the rest of the year flavours fag, unless it's about your completed draft. I put up with your shit for 3 years. Organize yourself and stop bitching, and write. Maybe you don't actually want to write...

Okay, blog time.
When I first read Harry Potter it wasn't a huge thing in the media (I think there were no sequels at the time). I was hugely disappointed because it was written like a children's book, the whole magic thing was retarded and the main characters were literal dumb children.
Both my parents were huge readers who rarely indulged in bestsellers so they picked stuff for me. My mom got me Harry Potter because someone at the bookstore told her it was popular with kids of my age.
I think I was 12yo and I was mostly done with Children and pre Adolescent lit, moving on to more "demanding" books, mostly classical YA books (like Tolkien, Poe, Doyle).

Fast forward more than a decade and I was dating this girl, younger by 6 years, who had grown up reading HP, Tolkien and Eragon. Our common interests were fairly plebeian but she wasn't THAT pleb (last time I checked, her new favorite book was The Book of Disquiet by Pessoa, but I don't think I had too much of an influence).
It was the early days of /lit/ and people shat on HP and neckbears reminisced about how cool Eragon was. The critique was typical 4chan hurr durr Harry Potter bad and
>reading genre fiction
I wanted to shit on both but my autism demanded to actually read them for myself. There was also an article by Harold Bloom iirc who asked himself if it was okay for kids to read shit for the sake of reading.
HP in particular had reshaped the cultural landscape and I wanted to check if I was being a pretentious cunt. So in a couple of weeks I read Eragon (utter shit) and the whole Harry Potter series.

I was 27 at the time so it was obviously too late for me. I could appreciate why so many young people liked it (basically children have no taste and after becoming "infected", their minds grew up at a similar rate to the maturity of the series).
What I will never understand is how or why the same people hardly venture outside genre fiction. They are the same dummies who find The Stranger or Greek classics too boring, and end up praising Rothfuss.

>They are the same dummies who find The Stranger or Greek classics too boring
Because they are. The only reason you and outer/lit/ reads them is to feel superior and intelligent, not because you actually enjoy them. Most people aren't that pretentious and just read what they like.

>> No.12381465

>>12381420
I grew up on genre fiction (not Harry Potter though) and I'd say I prefer more literary books as an adult. Your sense of superiority in regard to the 'brainwashed plebs' is unwarranted, some of those people probably wouldn't read at all if it weren't for those genre works. Obviously you think they have bad taste, but anything that helps literacy is good in my book. Basically, why_not_both.jpg

The superiority is probably just an ironical facade or a phase desu. If your anti intellectual knee jerk reaction to "boring" books is caused by their contempt, maybe use your head and stop projecting so much.
In my case, I picked up reading as a "serious" hobby when I was 19. I went to a technical college but my major in high school was Humanities, where I learned some of the boring stuff was actually good and some of it was just plain boring. I decided to read to expose myself to stuff that would make me more intelligent, or so I hoped. The sort of books I chose forced me to engage in a dialogue with the text and think, and not just paint an accurate or pretty picture inside my head.
I obviously enjoy those moments of reflection, otherwise I wouldn't keep doing it.

>>12381465
I honestly don't care about literacy in that context. Readers tend to stick to the things they know are enjoyable and hardly venture outside that.
Before pulp fiction, the offer was a lot more diverse. These days you can read 400 YA books about space vampires and you'll still have barely scratched the surface. This allows you to stay in a broader comfort zone (space gay vampires, cybervampires, vamps vs vamps, vamps vs fairies, etc) and you even mix other media, like a vlog of a girl reviewing vampire fiction, or watch vampire films, play vampire games, etc. There are whole communities dedicated to space vampires.
What would encourage you to explore other genres? Not genres in the sense of magical elves instead of space vampires.

im beginning to understand that harry potter's massive appeal wasn't merely a consequence of quality or marketing. the story drew on something the demographic already wanted to believe, validated their world view and then gave them the promise of a coveted place in that world.

The first two books form a pair, and the third and forth ones do as well. There is a time gap between the two sets, so I would recommend a pause between reading the first two and the latter ones.

To understand why some actions happened and why some characters acted in certain ways or how they end up you might want to read the whole cantos, but it is not required to enjoy just the first two, or even just Hyperion.

The second, third, and fourth books have a different structure than the first, which is told in episodes from the perspectives of different characters. Some people like only the first or second two books, some like the whole cantos.

I greatly enjoyed all four of them, and consider it a single, outstanding work of fiction. Try them and judge for yourself. If you don't like the third book (Endymion) you can probably dispense with fourth as well.
