Alright, I've last time I posted this thread, I got told to read A Game of Thrones. I read the first book, and it was very good. I keep up with the show, and so I was able to focus on the intricacies of the plot because I was familiar with the characters and major plot points.

I need help choosing what to read next, so once again I'm soliciting feedback. I keep a spreadsheet of my books, and any of them which are unread are potential candidates.

It takes a bit to really get going, and you have to invest significant effort to learn and remember the huge cast of characters and locations, but I thought it was a book that rewarded that effort. It's nice to see realistic characters who act like real people.

On War. I had to buy this twice because my friend lent me his copy and I left it on a shelf above the loo. Somebody else used the loo and did not return the cover flap to it's down position or close the door after, one of the cats got in there and knocked the book into the bowl. So, I had to but him a replacement, and I forgot to finish his copy and ended up buying another for myself. It's pretty good for war philosophy, he explains why not only winning the war is important but also maintaining the peace of the land you've conquered and also why war is fought at all. It's not too dry either.

On War is an awfully long read, but I am in the mood for some nonfiction. How much history is worked in? Any? And I've heard conflicting reports about how well the philosophy of war holds up today. I think I'll probably start it at least.

Yeah, I don't lean socialist, I read Basic Economics by black economist man, and I've read parts of, and own, The Wealth of Nations. I just wanted to understand Marxism better

It's long maybe but you're after reading A Game of Thrones which isn't short now. There's some history but it's not primarily a history book. His philosophy totally holds up today, understanding will help your interpretation towards the objective reality of current and recent conflicts.
I remember when I was small asking my father why the british don't just invade and subjugate ireland in order to end the troubles, and today I can see for myself why the us cannot stay or leave afghanistan. On War will inform you. Read the Wikipedia page and yeah start the book, read a fiction alongside it if you get bogged down, I do that myself with genre fiction usually.
