He was a slavophile and thought the old Russian traditionalism and Russian Orthodox Christianity would lead the world and influence all the other countries into going down the "right path," and therefore that Catholicism was the wrong path, and a challenge to the Russian Orthodox religion.

Essentially he thought Russia, a backwards shithole of constant suffering and oppression and backwards obscurantism, was the paragon of culture and society, and that the Sminem was the ideal human form.
