Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man (think Invisible Man but less than half the length and more than twice the depth.)

The Plague (Stranger was better. This is just Camus trying to mime the multi-textual meme from Quixote;)

Wuthering Heights (Utter pleb shit. All the tropes of a horny repressed 14 year old girl distilled into rarefied cringe)

The Tumult and the Shouting (Grantland Rice is the greatest American author of the 20th century.)

Loved it. I haven't read any other Mann but this was great, Adrian's conversation with Satan is gonna stick with me for a long time. I'm a sucker for Faustian stories, and with Faust and MaM I'm guessing you are too so you should like it. JR is a technically tough read, mainly on account of the syntax. The good thing is that it puts you in a meditative state & can play with your experience of time.

Ditto Kraznahorkai, though there is a manic quality to him that I like.

The deep philosophical difference between JR & War/War is that the former always side-steps the present moment & the latter never seems to let go of it.

Difficult to say. Life & Fate probably had the most "going on" in terms of plot, as it's the largest and most complicated one with a huge set of characters. It's basically a reworking of War & Peace set in the battle of Stalingrad instead of Napoleon's campaign. I probably enjoyed the plots of New York a bit more though, they're all very narratively interesting and keep you guessing because they're kind of deconstructed detective stories.
I'd say I liked the plot of all of them except Underworld. It had a few really neat moments but a lot of plodding through nothing in between, and it's another giant pomo tome where nothing really happens. Delillo sets up a giant "twist" ending that isn't really very surprising by the time you get halfway through the book. New York is also very postmodern, but I feel like making short, tightly written novellas works better with that, and overall Auster seems more inventive and focused with what he's trying to do.

I found the Histories very entertaining whenever I was in the right mindset, the early chapters are engrossing, and even if you can't take Herodotus at face value his enthusiasm is contagious.
However, later in the book, from Marathon onwards essentially, the digressions became tedious for me, and I suffered a bit from a "get to the good stuff" syndrome in the last three or four books.
That being said there is nothing like Histories out there and I definitely recommend reading it if you haven't. Read it in a Spanish translation (Manuel Balasch) so can't recommend one for anglos, sorry.

Well there’s hundreds of so-called “entry-level classics” and only so many books you can read in a year. Combine that with the fact 4chan is largely comprised of late-teens and early-20s and you have this thread. And I doubt well-read people would feel the need to post in threads like these due to the element of validation inherent in them.
