Why would you buy an ebook? More expensive than paper for no reason, DRM (yeah easy to strip but fuck supporting it with money), and they're all available for free.

I stopped bothering to even look at them because when I did they were more expensive. So last time I compared prices was at least a year ago.

If it exists as a paid ebook it exists as a free ebook.

They should be several dollars cheaper, there's no paper, no logistics.

Two main reasons
1. Some books (especially older ones) are not available in e-book format. Or, if they are, it is often absolute garbage Furby-based character recognition with typos and splices and whatnot.

2. Humans possess good spatial memory, and are actually quite good at recalling the location of a section in a book by its location on the page and with respect to the rest of the book (e.g. in the first tenth of the book). Therefore, for reference literature, I prefer to have a physical copy. For novels, which I almost never find myself referring back to, an e-reader is suitable.

That argument doesn't make any sense.

>> No.12346592

>>12346552
When you need to refer back to something in a book, it is actually easier to do with a physical book than with a Kindle. It's not just the graphical user interface: it's the fact that we are able to use the physical location of the reference in aiding the search. On the Kindle, the "physical location" of the reference is almost meaningless, because even a given page won't necessarily display on the screen the same way every time (especially when navigating backwards instead of forwards).

In any case, it ends up being rather difficult to find things positionally on a Kindle. You really have to know what you meant to look for. In a physical book, most people can generally just flip right to the region they care about, and find what they're looking for within a few page turns.

>> No.12346610

Permanence, you will have a book forever unless you actively get rid of it. An ebook you could lose your account, get a new ereader, forget to transfer a file etc.

Also, why not?

I need to take a break from the screen. When I read a book on a screen I fill like I’m feeding a phone/internet addiction.

I also feel like you are judged by others if you are staring at a phone. They assume you are on Facebook or something. When you are reading from a book people don’t look down on you.

I also like to have physical copies of the books I read. They are like trophies to me. They are good conversation starters when I have company over. And we have enough post “Your Library” threads on here that we all judge others by the kinds of books they have on their book shelves.

Most people are idiots, don't worry about what they think. Just do you the best you can.

>> No.12347219

The sensations of reading are a part of the experience. I can open one of my old paperbacks from high school and the smell will bring back a flood of memories. I also have a heavy annotation style and an ereader doesn't allow for that.

>>12347138
They're like trophies, yeah. I don't sell them either, unless they were shitty. If I enjoyed it, I'm keeping it forever and if I have to move across the country I'm lugging them with me or shipping them media rate.
