SPQR has better rating on Goodreads - which is the best metric in the world for determining a quality read - especially compared to an anon faggot on 4channel.

I wil stick with SPQR by Mary Beard, thanks!

The only threads I've seen about this book recently have been about how /lit/ is unhappy with this book, which rather suggests that it's the people who appreciate the book who are mad about defending it.

Boatwrights stuff is a textbook, will cost you a lot of money. Readable stuff.
Goldsworthy's stuff is sniffed at by most academics but it might be an ok introduction for the masses
SPQR is an alright read.
Most classical history books that go into miscellaneous topics will cost you a fair buck.
I unironically completed a degree in Ancient and Medieval History because I fell in love having read Greek myths as a child and played the shit out of Rome Total War.

Also to add, Potter's Companion to the Roman Empire is really comprehensive and what you need from a text book. I't s a bit more advanced than Boatwright's. Woolf's 'Rome: An Empire's Story' is an easy read in the vein of Goldsworthy.
Also, worth mentioning: the Cambridge Ancient History was fully uploaded online when I checked a few years ago.
