My point is that when a disproportionate number of members of "Group A" have "Characteristic X" when compared to "Group B" and "Group C" then it's not unreasonable to say that any random "Group A" member is disproportionately more likely to have "Characteristic X" than any equally random member of the other two groups. When you say race is just melanin and nothing else, you're claiming that any characteristics that have shown to correlate with race are just coincidence and that there aren't any race related factors like genetics. This is akin to saying that there is no way to determine whether the snake is venomous, the scales have no correlation with it's venom potency, and that it's a mix of coincidence and poorly done science that's the cause of people believing that brightly colored snakes are often more venomous than ones with muted colors.
