The first book is pretty awful, escapist's fun but boring and carbon copy of LotR, and Brooks' style is annoying and forced and childish, but the next two books get better. Then there's the Heritage series, which is great and fresh, and this is Brooks' style at its peak. Right after this, it takes a horrid nosedive. Everything he writes after the mid 90s is fucking awful both in quality and content. Imo, his best books are, in no particular order:
The Heritage tetralogy
Word and Void trilogy, in decreasing value
Elfstones
First three books of the Landover series
First King is OKAY.

That's about it. The Voyage trilogy gets an honorable mention for being an engaging story but awful, awful writing. Armageddon's is fun if you like post-apocalyptic stuff, but it's still poorly written.

>> No.12325289

>>12325265
Yeah Im really looking forward to Elfstones. I dont mind it being a carbon copy, it is kind of charming, I like these characters more too. Cheers for the list, I’ll jump into Heritage next if the itch is still there after this trilogy

The interactions between Rawlins and John were quite good, makes me wonder why Rawlins wanted to go with John in the first place - when Rawlins said he won't quit John, without any explanation as to why he is so loyal to him, I thought it might have been a homoerotic reason.
My first Cormac book was The Road which is miles apart from ATPH and not as good, if I recall correctly.
I have heard Blood Meridian praised as his best book which probably means it isn't but I am still interested to read it and the rest of the trilogy. I want to know more about John, Rawlins and Blevins if possible. Guess I'll find out.

Not sure why so many people complain about all the characters making it hard to follow, it's pretty clear so far that all the different tangents are vignettes surrounding the central plot thread of Slothrop somehow being connected to where bombs fall.
Unless it goes in a completely different direction, it makes me wonder whether most of the people who complain about it have actually read it.
