(I guess I could ask all of /lit/, but since I'm more of a Fantasy reader...)

Do you prefer physical books or their digital versions, particularly Kindle?

I like the cover art of books most of the time, and their spines, and it'd look neat in a collection. However, Kindle versions are just so convenient - and not just for transporting. Having the dictionary, WIkipedia, and notes right then and there is incredibly helpful.

I'm some length into The Crimson Vault. Simon and Valin's (first, probably) fight just ended and I don't remember what else. I'm hoping there's some scene where Leah tries to act tough to show (a possibly disbelieving? idk) Simon who she really is/her strength and Simon just ambivalently teleports behind her and cuts that shit out.
I like it so far. I realized this was spammed hard at me some months back and am not sure how to feel.

Having a bit of a dumb dilemma. I just started getting into reading, really like Fantasy. Went to the thrift store and found books 1-3 of the original Sword of Shannara Trilogy. After 2 days, I'm 5 chapters into Book 1 and really like the writing and characters. But it is 726 pages long. I have other books on my "Want to Read" list which are half as long. I'm thinking about ditching Shannara #1 and going with the other books I'm interested in that are much shorter. Does length play a factor in what you read?

>> No.12301172

>>12301102
Rule #1 Never rad books by authors who have Terry in their name.

Rule #2 A length of a book doesn't take or add to the enjoyment of a book. It's the story and the skill of the author that matters. There are some long books (like Strange and Norrell) that make you want more when you are finished, and short books that you just want over. Read reviews, blurbs, and look at the tags that a book has. You have to figure out what you like. As a new reader you will read a lot of trash and think it profound, but as you mature as a reader your tastes will improve. You can put the book on pause if you like and try something else. You usually have to do that with books that are tedious, put on pause, read something short and enjoyable, cleanse palate, then pick up back the book (if you ready want to read it). But Shannara is shit, read it if you want though, as a new reader it would be enjoyable to you.

Worth a look if you're interested, but don't go in with high hopes.

nah you misunderstand me, he meant it in the critical sense, as in unrealistic/idealistic
>Writers such as Robert A. W. Lowndes, Farmer, and Michael Moorcock have criticized the novel for being a hypothetical utopia, in the sense that while Heinlein's ideas sound plausible, they have never been put to the test. Moorcock wrote an essay entitled "Starship Stormtroopers" in which he attacked Heinlein and other writers over similar "Utopian fiction".
heinlein has the sense to justify his somewhat utopian Terran Federation with the fact it exists only through a brutal form of hyper-war (and that's a good thing)

I don't think it's a huge problem. It adds dynamics to a scene, breaking up the dialogue so it doesn't become two or three characters swapping line after line. Fanfic and new writers do tend to overuse it, though, thinking that something has to happen on every line or else characters are static. It's the same problem as people who constantly use "he exclaimed", "she cried", "they pouted", instead of just "said". Amateur mistakes...

I'm halfway through this and it's really not what I was hoping it'd be. I feel Ursula betrayed me quite a few times already.

Do you have any recommendations about a visitor in a strange world reacting to what they see as common practices? Developing the traveller's intentions as part of the plot isn't a must but that'd be cool.

But it *is* utopian. From what can be inferred in the book, the life of the average Joe is pretty good to the point where the underclasses aren't jumping up to do federal service to get out of the government housing blocks and off the dole. (something so many military scifi authors use as a background for why Joe Everyman is joining The Space Marines)

I think Ken MacLeod got it more right when he described it as a "elitist liberal" system. If anything the Federation is a idealized Soviet government.

The Chief Goldondier gave a lecture
on the moment’s great import,
on this great holiday.
How tremendous outer space is,
how huge its mystery,
how small a part I play.

And you heard the chorus swelling
in the Light-year Hall’s abyss
and the crowd of people thrilling
at the infinite precipice.

And many thousands were weeping
and several hundreds said:
This truly is Fate’s way:

Goldonder Aniara
has carried on its journey
for twenty years today.
And many stood unspeaking.
But suddenly someone said
a light-year is a grave.

Those twenty years of journey
are sixteen hours of light-path
on the sea of the light-year grave.
Then none of us were laughing.

Near all of us were weeping.
A light year is a grave.

Kinda but it's more that Condor Heroes is the thing that all the authors of stuff like Crouching Tiger were inspired by. And of course instead of GoT you've got the Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

Another good movie to check out is Forbidden City Cop (or it's original title, "Imperial Secret Agent 008") which is essentially a Naked Gun style Wuxia film. It opens with the protagonist attempting to arrest some wuxia heroes for trying to have a wire-fu duel on the roof of the emepror's palace at midnight on the night of a full moon and so on.

I never understood why you bible thumpers come in sffg. When our core beliefs starts with GRI APPROVAL. If you don't like books where Christians are the enemies, or Christians are somehow, get this, not infallible, then don't come here. Even our chink recommendations have the protagonists cucking every male he meets by fucking their women, sisters, or mothers.

Shoo. Come back when you learn that the bible is a fantasy story that stole from Gilgamesh and other religions.

You haven't been on the internet long I see, much less 4chins. That last sentence was a direct dig at us, saying that he is better than us because he buys all his books. And we are low scum because we pirate it.
He self elevates his worth concisely with that little phrase. Showing that while he is amongst us, he isn't one of us. It's basic separation and distancing techniques used by the polo playing rich snobs.

Also notice how he uses books as decorations? He is from outer lit and a snob. He only cares about his appearance to others. He probably regularly posts in the bookshelf threads, trying to make us "unwashed masses" feel inadequate and worthless. If you can't read the hidden meaning behind people's post you don't belong on 4chan. This isn't redshit. We don't give you clues when we are using sarcasm, dissing you, or making a joke.

Pol are the type of people that would force someone to do something that they don't want to do, with their own body. Like those off the grid communities. Where you sleep when you're told, married who they tell you to, and give birth when they say.

Like I said, read books that pol recommend, where they are right, and you as an individual must follow their beliefs. Got raped and missed your period? You better keep that baby. You're 13 had sex for the first time and missed your period? Better keep that baby.

I've heard Ramsay Bolton is merciless and needlessly cruel in the books, which kinda preplexes me why they changed it for the show.

It's always funny when someone is so cocky about something he's wrong about.I'vebeen "on the internet" since 1998, that's more then some people.on 4chan have been alive.

Back to the matter at hand, he just stated that the only reason he can see for not buying paper books is money, and he's not that poor that he can't afford something that cheap.

As for books as decoration, coming into someones apartment and not seeing at least a couple bookshelves makes you jugde the person in a bad way. I'm sure you do that too.

anyone know of any "good" shtf novels? something like homesteading, selfreliance and prepping etc. preferably some romance with it but not straight up erotica. i just read this short novella that was basically about survivalism after america had been emp'd and it was pretty entertaining but id love something full novel sized. can be a series too but one offs are preferred. doesnt have to be ultra realistic too. can be in any kind of setting like for example a zombie apocalypse or alien invasion but id prefer it more down to earth.
