Novellas

Must read novellas. Please recommend me novellas of quality. Especially ones that could introduce me to various authors.

Please don't link me to /lit/'s Wiki page of novellas, already read most of them.

Well, if you've already read the bit of Japanese literature on there, here's some more novella-sized stuff:

House of the Sleeping Beauties by Yasunari Kawabata
Beauty and Sadness by Yasunari Kawabata
The Lake by Yasunari Kawabata
Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto
Asleep by Banana Yoshimoto
A Personal Matter by Kenzaburo Oe
The Setting Sun by Osamu Dazai
A Cat, A Man, and Two Women by Junichiro Tanizaki
Some Prefer Nettles by Junichiro Tanizaki
Quicksand by Junichiro Tanizaki
The Housekeeper and the Professor by Yoko Ogawa
The Three-Cornered World by Natsume Soseki
The Sound of Waves by Yukio Mishima
The Waiting Years by Fumiko Enchi

A couple are slightly over 200 pages, but I think they are still pretty novella-ish. If you're unfamiliar with Japanese authors, a lot of this would be good introductory works for them.

I'm not too familiar with Japanese literature, but I'd recommend that people steer clear of Banana Yoshimoto, because she is truly terrible.

Nope, Japanese literature is really hard to get ahold on in ebook form, aside from the Murakami's and a few other recent authors. Libraries usually have a least a few of those though, I think.

I'll admit that I haven't studied her with any particular depth. I only read a collection of short stories called 'Lizard.' I'm kind of a short story nerd and I can usually knock out a book of short stories fairly quickly, but I really had to muscle my way through her stories. The stories just felt very weak and unfocused, and I honestly can't remember a single one, which is a bad sign really. The diction was pretty drab and uninteresting as well (needlessly so), though maybe this could be blamed on the translator.
