Should I stop using the reading of literature as a form of identity? I think it’s high time I start being more serious about writing...

Yes this is maturity. I saw a writer in twitter, one who writes for established magazines and papers who tweeted, “ if you consider Vonnegut a good writer I sympathize with you, it’s hard being a teenager”. I thought it was pathetic that a 30 year old woman still created her self identity through this kind of attachment to trivial externalities.

On the one hand i think you should stop it, but on the other hand i understand where you are coming from, so many people today are growing up without an inherited identity. Broken families, race-mixing parents, been in school since birth pretty much. No profession or piece of land to call "your own". People used to be born into their "caste" back in the day, now you're just supposed to "find yourself" somehow. Especially tough if you grew up without a father, i'm sure. My father is a hunter and outdoorsman so naturally i am one too, and i'll always have that as an identity of sorts.

I spent two years writing a novel and finally finished it to no fanfare or excitement from the outside world.

My mother, my wife, my best friends. Everyone just shrugged. None of them have ever taken on something so considerable, especially not a creative endeavor. But they don't know enough about how much work it is to even understand that it takes a lot of work, they think it's the same as the bullshit poetry their cousins post on facebook or whatever.

Anyway, my point is, you can't win. You can create your own art and try to make that your identity, but people will just think you're autistic.

Why do you not have a settled identity already? Are you a person?

It's a useful shortcut to get to know people, mate. Like, if you really enjoy reading Rupi Kaur, I can assume a good deal about you.

These kinds of identities are only meaningless if they're made up of raw consumption. If this identity is also making you learn things (and not just trivia) or create things then it is a positive identity imo.

That''s a trick question. The identity (i.e. ego) must be negated to find Self. Take the Vedantapill.
