It probably took me 10 books to realize that Jacques has about 4 narrative templates with a few outliers. I probably read all of them through Rackety Tam.

In hindsight, Redwall is mediocre, but not because of the stale plots; it's the shit pacing that really hurts it. The prose itself is forgettable.

Thankfully, some books aimed for younger audiences hold up well

Fun story, we had a class project where we read a book and then wrote to the author, and I read this. Being the dumbest little shit imaginable, in my letter I asked her whether I should address her as Miss or Ms DiCamillo and if she still worked at a book store because it's the one piece of information I gleaned from a tiny biography blurb I read.

Probably half the kids got responses from their author, and she responded to me with a hand written note answering both my questions. I still have it folded up in the cover of the book.
