You remember those twin statues of the Buddha that I told you about? Carved out of a mountain in Afghanistan, that got dynamited by the Taliban back in the spring? Notice anything familiar?"

"Twin Buddhas, twin towers, interesting coincidence, so what."

"The Trade Center towers were religious too. They stood for what this country worships above everything else, the market, always the holy fucking market."

"A religious beef, you're saying?"

"It's not a religion? These are people who believe the Invisible Hand of the Market runs everything. They fight holy wars against competing religions like Marxism. Against all evidence that the world is finite, this blind faith that resources will never run out, profits will go on increasing forever, just like the world's populations--more cheap labor, more addicted consumers.

He's a proto-SJW proto-BLM degenerate decadent old money Ivy league philo-semitic anglo-zionist boomer who writes about Negroes sticking their fingers up white people's anuses, pedophilia, and authority figures eating turds, among other things. It's pretty obvious from everything he's ever written that he is anti-authoritarian, hyper-egalitarian, and has some interest in anarchism, though he ultimately doubts the efficacy of all ideologies and attempts at transcendence like socialism, leaving him, ta-da, a tacit liberal like everybody else in his caste.

Basically, for all his paranoia and insight, he's a NYT-reading Democrat-leaning creative professional with a kid in an expensive private school and an apartment on the Upper West Side. He fetishizes the 60s, pop music and science, hates the Man, and loves television and marijuana

It just goes to show that politics has virtually nothing to do with intellect or artistic skill. If a genius like Tom Pynchon is corruptible, everybody is. He's hardly the first smart person to get taken in by a stupid social trend, but he is one of the most disappointing because he's such a self-aware and intelligent person.

Historically that's true, but it's changed in recent history, at least among Americans

>>12279554
He's no right-winger but also he's honestly not that leftist, at least in economic terms. Clearly not a Marxist. Look at the conversation Tchitcherine has in Gravity's Rainbow about socialism, it's fairly skeptical. I think Pynchon is fascinated by capitalism and both fears and admires the way it manipulates societies. He wants to temper the beast and recognizes the chaos and misery it's responsible for, he admires attempts at escape, but he also doesn't quite believe that alternatives are possible. I would categorize him as a progressive liberal who reluctantly admits the overwhelming ability of capitalism to trickle into every aspect of one's community and life, while also recognizing the evil and destruction it creates. I would put him somewhere around the progressive wing of the Democratic party

Pynch... easy on the anti-globalist agenda

>> No.12280116

Kekulé dreams the Great Serpent holding its own tail in its mouth, the dreaming Serpent which surrounds the World. But the meanness, the cynicism with which this dream is to be used. The Serpent that announces, "The World is a closed thing, cyclical, resonant, eternally-returning," is to be delivered into a system whose only aim is to violate the Cycle. Taking and not giving back, demanding that "productivity" and "earnings" keep on increasing with time, the System removing from the rest of the World these vast quantities of energy to keep its own tiny desperate fraction showing a profit: and not only most of humanity—most of the World, animal, vegetable, and mineral, is laid waste in the process. The System may or may not understand that it's only buying time. And that time is an artificial resource to begin with, of no value to anyone or anything but the System, which must sooner or later crash to its death, when its addiction to energy has become more than the rest of the World can supply, dragging with it innocent souls all along the chain of life. Living inside the System is like riding across the country in a bus driven by a maniac bent on suicide . . . though he's amiable enough, keeps cracking jokes back through the loudspeaker . . .
