Bloom is a defender of the canon which is what the thread is about. Silverblatt gushes about books with titles like “What We Saw on the Way Home” which will be forgotten 2 years after they are published and deservedly so. He may have some loftier tastes but he is not going to be some great defender of serious literature. And yes, years ago before I became more discerning I read a lot of contemporary lit, often stuff on his recommendation and it is mostly forgettable.

Also, what do you expect from him? He has to put out a lot of episodes of radio, so how selective can he be? He's had a lot of greats on there though. Delillo, Vonnegut, Wallace, Morrison. He has to be polite to his guests. Maybe their books aren't the greatest of all time but he's not going to tell them that to their face.
