The reason why I suggested Zhuangzhi over TTC is because The Zhuangzhi explains Taoist concepts in short stories whereas the TTC is purposely written to be cryptic without any context. Also, reading Z first makes reading TTC much easier because now you have a much better grasp of Taoism and come to a more correct interpretation of the text.

It does, but it doesn't provide any context, which is how we end up with several different commentaries and interpretations, especially the kind where new age hacks try reinterpret the Tao Te Ching to make it applicable for modern living. Besides, most scholars agree the Zhuangzhi is the more important text of the two, yet most people in the west are completely unaware of its existence. Don't get me wrong, they are both great works on Taoism, but the Zhuangzhi should take precedence.
