Either I lose my consentration and day dream for half an hour, or I get stuck on a passage and have to decode it, spending 30-40 min.

Is it possibly to get out of this brainlet rutt?

Find something light. Something that you could space out during half of the page, keep going, and not really mind. Force yourself to read it. Eventually you'll get good at reading itself, and you just move up to more complicated works.

This. A lot of people don’t seem to realize that reading is a skill that you can drastically improve.

Thank you good friends. I always feel like I'm wasting my time when reading fiction or pop-philosophy (is this what you mean by easy?). Everyone else is so far ahead of me already I'm too scared to start very low.

which of these would you say is the easiest to begin reading:
>after virtue by McIntyre
>meditation, objections and replies by Descartes
>Nichomachean ethics

These are really my only choices if I am to pass the next semester.

I'm not very familiar with these, but I do remember they're complicated. By that I mean you're SUPPOSED to stop after a little while, go "wait what the fuck was that" and take some time to figure it out. You're not going to read these in the same way you're going to read fiction.

Dude if you weren't doing this you'd be doing something wrong.

Not these. Don't force it OP. You have other problems that keep your brain occupied and until you solve them you won't be able to read plus you'll feel like a brainlet.

Think of the book as something that you're defeating. Imagine that the book is some guy trying to rape your grandmother and that every page you read is a kick to his testicles.
