How the FUCK do I understand poetry? Do I have to know rhythm and meter to appreciate poetry? I bought Leaves of Grass and I like it, but I want to appreciate it fully. Do I need to research the technicalities of poetry before I can fully appreciate them?

Read it aloud or listen to it read. Let yourself really hear it, not just read it. The true aesthetic appreciation does not require a technical breakdown. But if you find that helps you appreciate literature in general, go ahead and read up on poetry theory and analysis.

You need to have a solid grasp on the language the poem is written and degree of poetic sensitibility yourself.

Actually you need a degree in poetic sensitibility, which currently is only delivered by my Legitimate University for Poetic Sensitibility.

See you in class, anon.

I agree with this sentiment. Even though I've studied the technical aspects of poetry in depth, the most important thing I've learned is to give yourself away to the poem, to cease doubt or any scrutiny while reading and just allow the poem to run through you. I have found this the best way to enjoy poetry. The technical have been useful in figuring out why a certain part had that effect, or uncovering alternative or supplementary meanings.
