Soup /lit/.
My gf is Russian and enjoys Dostoyevsky.
I'm trying to think of a good book to buy her from Christmas and would like something along those lines, that is, classic Russian literature.
She said that she wanted the Russian version of "Gone With the Wind" but wouldn't tell me what book that actually was.
Based off of this, what book should I get her for Christmas?

That would be true for Tolstoy because we all were bombarded by Tolstoy dick-sucking in school. Dostoevsky too, but at least he's honest unlike Tolstoy and he is also a sadboy - to which most Russians can relate.

>> No.12241406

>>12241387
Except the meme in Russia is that Dostoyevsky is universally hated as high school lit. Tolstoy dicksucking is very hard to find considering the Christian anarchy stuff, and teachers that do love Tolstoy are often seen as cool, not because of their dicksucking Tolstoy, but because they're probably going to be arrested. Literally talk to any Russian.

I've tried and it's basically impossible, unless you want to pay out the ass for a beat to hell copy, and even then it probably won't be a great translation. Speaking of, I'd recommend the Maguire and Malmstad translation, assuming you're looking for a translated copy anyway.

He's not hated in general, he's hated by high school students, because when your hormones are running wild, the last thing you want to read is several hundred pages of "tfw killed a granny for a rouble". People are rarely ripe enough at that age to have genuine interest in existential and ethical questions and his prose is hardly good enough to enchant anyone on its own. Overall he's revered of course.

Don't worry, you didn't get rused, he's just giving you shit because lit acts like translations are the worst thing in the world even though 95% of people here only read in their native language. I own that same edition and it's really nicely made and printed. Kind of unusually large feeling but not in a cumbersome way at all. Good choice.

Obviously reading a book in its original language as a fluent reader is the ideal, but that's not always possible. Most people who aren't academics don't have the time or ability to learn a language as complex as Russian just for reading novels, and the odds of an average person getting more value out of reading an untranslated book with a shaky grasp of the language versus a well done translation is unlikely. And that's just a single language. Pretending that it's absolutely impossible for a translation to have any value as lit likes to do is ridiculous. Besides, he said she prefers reading in English, meaning he's getting her what she likes. There's no point in him being autistic and getting her the original in Russian if she wouldn't be comfortable reading it.
