Any philosphy majors on /lit/? Do you like it? What do you plan on doing with it? I’m currently a philosophy major considering switching to English since it has better career prospects.

I know this might be off topic but idk where else to ask, so please allow it mods.

Bachelors of philosophy, currently in my masters in English. I’ll ask you the question I wish I would have asked myself more seriously before I started my masters, because I chose English over philosophy for the same reasons you’re considering it: if you want a degree with better career prospects, why in the FUCK are you getting an English degree? Either stay with philosophy because it’s based and you love it (legitimate reasons imo) or get a degree with good career prospects. But if you’re gunning for the latter, don’t get an English degree you dolt.

I graduated earlier this year from Cal with a degree in philosophy. Currently interviewing for grad school in a healthcare related field. There's are two dichotomous perceptions of philosophy majors. One person will hesitate for a moment and then ask "why philosophy?" in tones of feigned sincerity, ultimately betrayed by the too-high pitch that reveals their condenscension. The other person will have genuine admiration and curiosity, which is easy to discern.

I remember for a brief time wanting to be a professor, then I got to uni and realized I was a brainlet and that you have to be a literal genius to be a professor at any college worth working at.

Right, if you’re a top professor in the philosophy department of a top 15 school you’ve gotta be pretty smart. I guess I have a different take on “any college worth working at.” I’d be fine to work for 130k a year to talk about literature and philosophy at some half-decent hardly-known university, and you don’t need to be a genius to achieve that.

I'm 21. Through my personal projects I've been working on since I've graduated HS I've been given the opportunity to obtain a history degree from the university of chicago. Not sure if it's worth it, even from such a good school. I'm not planning on pursuing postgrad or an academia position.

English has better prospects than philosophy. With an English degree you can always become a teacher, can't say the same for philosophy.

I got my bachelors in philosophy and math, and then finished my PhD in math last year.

I genuinely enjoy philosophy more than math, and often found much of the reasoning involved in both to be similar in nature. Philosophy doesn't pay the bills however, so I chose not to pursue it further than a bachelors degree.

Honestly OP, I'd double major if you can do so, otherwise just pick up something more employable and do philosophy is a hobby. I still try to read up on philosophy of mind when I get the chance, and I find it's less tiresome now than it was when I was an undergrad.

If you are going to do a very theoretical humanities degree like philosophy or English, at least have the sense to double major with a more "practical" field, self-study a field you could enter into in grad school, or roll the dice and look for a job that accepts liberal arts majors and isn't completely soul-sucking.
