what did nietzsche mean by this? this is from the birth of tragedy btw.

>> No.12220451

It's from Schopenhauer's idea of the world as 'will' and 'representation'. We perceive the world as representation; as an aesthetic phenomenon. Someone more learned than me can probably elaborate on this.

I didn't read this book of Nietzsche's, but I've read Schopenhauer's The World as Will and Representation..

Essentially, what we see in the physical world is the world of effects. All of what we see has an underlying cause, which also has underlying causes. All causes stem from the Will. The Will is that which is behind nature and desire and goals. We are manifestations of the Will, and find and create objects in the world to represent our will. My desire is to achieve a certain feeling, be that of status, comfort, or power, so I find something to represent that desire and "will" my way towards it.

The will is unquencheable, however. It's the eternal sisyphus. We are manifestations of the will, and the Will aims to fulfill itself. We find mere representations to temporarily quench that thirst for fulfillment, but the very nature of reality is striving and achieving. Achieving leads to posterior strivings.

As Nabokov put it, "we are most artistically caged", in his Pale Fire. No desire will ever quench our desiring nature. The very thing-in-itself that underlies reality is ever-striving towards something. We are entrapped in a beautiful landscape which exerts a magnetic pull on our faculty of interest. It's a mere shell that encapsulates the underlying reality, which is eternal striving. We just find something to strive for, but it could be anything. The choices are aesthetical.

>> No.12220770

>>12220762 here
Now I don't really agree with this 100%
There is a balance in this "choice" faculty as far as I understand. Perception of meaning is what guides this aesthetical selection of pursuits, and this meaning is brought forth by experience and memory, so it's halfway deterministic, but that is the Jordan Peterson in me that is speaking.

>> No.12220991

What he means by that is that we still haven't found a purpose of aesthethics, we just like it, we can't explain it from an evolutionary sense, so we can't completely disregard it as meaningless

>> No.12221219

>>12220433
don't take the existence of the world for granted, because the only reason why we think the world exists is due to the perception of our severely limited sensations.

>> No.12221424

It doesn't have anything to do with transcendental idealism or Schopenhauer's theory of the Will. It means literally what it says. There are a number of ways you could attempt to justify life. An aesthetic justification is the only one Nietzsche accepts. Life as an amusing spectacle for the gods. In response to the problem of suffering, he doesn't kiss the earth and praise God like Dostoevsky, or reject life and embrace asceticism like Schopenhauer. He recognizes life for what it is and accepts it anyway because he enjoys the grand masquerade and wants it to continue. He doesn't require anything more.

>> No.12221439

>>12221424
Sounds very alluring, but with the world being so ugly and with the beauty being so rare, aesthetic is nowhere enough to justify life. Moreover, beauty doesn't even belong to this world, it's a 'grand masquerade', and knowing this deceit, it's impossible to savour it.

I'm not correcting you on the content of the book, I argue with the point you seem to have drawn from it. No matter how powerful art is, it is only a deceit if it's limited to 'pure aesthetics'. Greek tragedies are beyond beauty and ugliness, their purpose was not to hide or embellish, on the contrary, it was to show the miserable truth about human nature — about how fragile and pitiful man is if he is left in the current of causality known as 'fate'.

Life is suffering to us because we are aware of ourselves. Not because it's painful to live. If we accept that this is all that life is -truly- then we can enjoy the play and maybe even be a part of it if we desire to roleplay.

Life discloses itself to us mainly in suffering, and a in bit of happiness too. people value stuff because it looks pretty
even if you somehow think ugliness is pretty then you've tricked yourself into thinking its pretty or you're lying and miserable -- ergo ultimately everything revolves around aesthetic

You could rephrase this as: justification of the world on a strictly rational (i.e. non-aesthetic) basis is impossible.
Or >>12220621 is another way of putting it.
He's undeniably correct, too. I've never seen anyone come up with a convincing argument against Nietzsche here.

how do we know that anything has a cause? it isn't logically necessary.

Nietzsche didn’t believe in causality or in mechanics. This is schopenhauer’s transformation of German Idealism into metaphysical pessimism, Nietzsche doesn’t use that language and his Will is distinct from’s S’s will

All things have cause. They just don't need to be a physical a cause. Physical phenomena stem from mental phenomena. You think and then you act your thoughts out. It doesn't have to be conscious, too. The Will is the cause for causes, though. I'm a little high right (just came from the doctor) now so I think it's better we discuss this later.
