It's explicitly referenced a lot in DtRH1. The man Yuki encounters on the train is Haller and the talking book they encounter later is Steppenwolf itself. Moreover, I'm not sure whether this is a mainstream interpretation, but I think Hermine (or even Maria) may have not been a real character (similar to Kagami) instead a product of Haller's internal "wolf" desire to have spent his youth being a Chad instead of being an intellectual. When he "murders" Hermine, it's him accepting his own life and killing off that part of his personality .The contrast between Haller (representing civilisation) and "the wolf" also brings to mind the Harmonizer/Destroyer/Creator distinction.

As for Pynchon, I'd start with Lot49, since it's short and deals with the theme directly, and if you liked it, move on to GR.
