Not much into GRI. A measured amount won't ruin book, but as a consistent theme it would. I'm very interested in survival/rebuilding from scratch stories. Defoe's Robinson Crusoe and Stirling's Island in the Sea of Time come to mind. I dislike unfinished series, even if they're consistently worked on. I also like stories of man against crushing bureaucracy, Vance has a few of these. Stephenson generally and Robinson's Mars trilogy are enjoyable, if exhausting, so tales of Engineering could work. I like cats too :3

Most books I read rate a 3, it's very rare I have a 5/5. Even Daniel Black which I and many others shill has many flaws, but they are easy to ignore because the book offers somethings you can't get elsewhere.
Also what I like/love in a book would not translate well for others. That's why I go by the... for lack of a better word let's say trope. I catalog a book by the majority of tropes it has, then throw them in a chart.

I personally like magic and magical engineering. Finding clever ways to beat a system with magic, or surviving with your wits and limited resources makes a book (when well written) a minimum of 4 for me. Other factors might make me raise it to 5. But as I said, those are far and in between. Some might have great or some good survival or magic, but the prose is horrendous, or the author makes the protagonist do something against their character to cause drama or get out of a bind, or the author writes too many childish characters (when the person is an adult), or the author puts in some PC shit that does absolutely nothing for the story (it's just there for pandering sake and brownie points, I have no problem when they put faggots in books, it's when so much time is dedicated to passing on the knowledge that the person likes it up the poop chute, only for it not to matter at all in the end).

But if you really want I can give some of my top 5s from over the years.

Hmm. Looking back to my early days on goodreads (2010 onwards) I see a lot of books are rated 5stars... when I know they were a 3, but that time I was under peer/author pressure. I didn't want to offend anyone, but I've since grown out of that ingratiating way. I rated name of the wind and wise man fear 5 stars when I saw all the flaws and nowheres the books went, but that time finding good books were hard and you overlooked the flaws and rated high so the author would continue... Monster is an entirely different beast than Traitor in almost every way - where the first book followed only Baru, Monster has several POV characters. Traitor emphasized pretense and betrayal, Monster is more about re-establishing human connections. Most glaringly, while Traitor had a sweeping, sometimes breakneck exploration of a rebellion and it's micro and macro aspects, Monster is a much more traditionally paced adventure.

In an interview about the book, Seth mentioned that the backdrop to the events of Monster was a sort of fantasy Cuban missile crisis scenario. Having devoured the book, I can say this is only accurate if Kennedy took members of ExCom into the Cuban jungles himself to find an ancient Carribean nuclear reactor. I hope you weren't expecting to see the heart of the Empire of Masks this time around, or to see the gaggle of Imperial cryptarchs shanking each other with plot daggers. Baru is,instead, on a boat. And some islands. But mostly on a boat.

To us who went into this book expecting an even more intricate dive into a web of intrigue, betrayal and power plays, Monster can seem like a huge disappointment at first. This is compounded by the fact that the beginning of the book is by far its weakest portion, with shouting, petulance and overt antagonising taking the place of the first book's guarded skullduggery.

When the book gets going however, and more characters enter the fray, this impression quickly improves - the characters are almost universally likeable, the banter has never been better and the writing and pacing are much tighter than in Traitor. However, as I mentioned previously, this comes at the expense of the story's scope - without going into spoilers, Baru and her miserable band of put upon schemers have to find a eugenicistic MacGuffin out somewhere in Oriati Mbo (which is gorgeously realized, hats off to Seth's worldbuilding). In the end, they seem to find it and...that's your lot. The book ends in a cliffhanger, and a particularly non-impressive one.

Overall, I'd say my disappointment with how the book turned out is that my expectations we're,not so much subverted, but completely side stepped. Nothing that I expected to be in the book made it in and what did I found to be much less impactful than in Traitor. Then again, Seth's writing style is only improving and the book is a definite joy to read, once it gets going. I don't regret buying or reading it, but I am much more lukewarm on the ideas developing for the last two instalments.

Is it just me or The Books Of The South (aka book 4 & 5) a really boring drag?

I've just finished the part where the remains of the company and their newly recruited rice fucker armies arrive at the first shadow wizard castle and holy fuck, had I to force myself through every page.

From the beginning it was clear that the Black Company series would have a slower pace then David Gemell's or even Joe Abercrombie's books, but sometimes there is just TOO MUCH pointless inner monologue from Croaker.
Does it pack up the pace once the (Spoiler warning!)narrator changes in the later books?


PS: I can't fucking stand the jungle setting for some reason, it feels like Cook tried too hard to put the vietnam-feel into a fantasy setting.

AWMF - 2/10 wish I didn't read it. Frustrating and skipped a ton of things that would have been fun to read about. Character develops backwards and becomes a Rothfuss Mary Sue if he wasn't already which he was
ASRFST - 6.5/10 cute easy read, fun PoV, different way of story telling that was charming. Reading more than a short story of it would be painful.

Count Zero is better in some ways than Neuromancer. You can see him developing as a writer, trying and succeeding at writing different characters than Hacker or Razorgirl, and expansion of his themes - art and AIs as something more than what people expect. I also liked two of the story resolutions better than Neuromancer - Bobby and Marly's. Neuromancer is still my favorite Gibson novel but CZ is easily second.

There's a few people who regularly hate on it, but in the past there's also been unapologetic discussion of it. I love the series warts and all. For all its flaws I still think it's way more enjoyable than most of the fantasy I've tried reading in the last 5 years. It's not even nostalgia talking because I only started reading WoT in 2012, in my sophomore year of college. For me, nostalgia is stuff like Riftwar, the Hobbit/LotR, ASoIaF, His Dark Materials, or Black Magician Trilogy. Stuff I read in middle and high school.

New book! This is pretty good so far. An old, traveling storyteller is arrested after being accused of witchcraft in fantasy medieval eastern Europe. He uses his charisma to make himself important and avoid execution. It's a story about stories and how they shape us.

The last few that Jordan wrote before he died, easily. Book 9 is unbearably slow at points, and Mat is the only saving grace of Book 10. Book 11 basically felt like treading water without any real plot advancement.

Prior to that there were still slow spots due to many new character viewpoints being added to the narrative for no real reason. The worst example of narrative bloat early on is in Book 5, probably. Almost a third of the book is wasted on a side plot where nothing important happens. This is made more galling by the fact that one of the 3 main characters was omitted from book 5 while this plodding road trip adventure was inserted almost as if it were to fill space.

It's not a jungle. It' set on not-India, with monsoon plains, Himalayas and all the rest. There is a Vietnam copy area, although the company never go there it is mentioned a lot. Later on there's some pretty blatant Vietnam war imagery. Personally I found the narrator changes to be a nice breath of fresh air for the last few books; Cook does a nice job of changing the style up a bit with each shift. Overall the ending is still my GOAT fantasy ending but the story is still fundamentally the same, so if your not enjoying it maybe bail out.
