The Hobbit's pretty good. Black Company seemed kind of erratic and juvenile to me...it's hard to explain. Like a mix between good fantasy and that YA series where that kid travels around questing for 7 gemstones to save the kingdom.

For fantasy and horror really standalone novels are better in my opinion.

Okla Hannali by R.A. Lafferty. It's got folky supernatural elements, but it's no fantasy novel. I didn't like it that much. It sheds light on a forgotten episode of american history, but I didn't find much of value in it beyond that. I was more impressed by Lafferty's knowledge of native american history than by the novel itself, which is crazy, given that the guy could speak ten languages and was an expert on theology and Roman history, all while working as an electrical engineer who wrote science fiction on the side.

dont really want a litrpg at this time. just something that fits the setting was describing. ive read cast under an alien sun and that was pretty great in my opinion. the book i posted is a bit on the dry side though. the author spends lots of time explaining things and goes into detail because his other novel series is a space engineer series where stuff like basic repair of lamps and pipes takes two pages on average. its not a bad thing though. sometimes i can appreciate someone going into detail about what is happening.

>Have you read any books that are based on Native American folklore?
The Haunted Mesa by Louis L'Amour comes to mind, it's an interesting combination of genres (Western, Science Fiction with a little Horror and Mystery thrown in). It has some weird scenes but I'd still recommend it.

From the Inside Flap:

>The Navajo called them the Anasazi: an enigmatic race of southwestern cliff dwellers. For centuries, the sudden disappearance of this proud and noble people has baffled historians. Summoned to a dark desert plateau by a desperate letter form an old friend, renowned investigator Mike Raglan is drawn into a world of mystery, violence, and explosive revelation. Crossing the border beyond the laws of man and nature, he will learn the astonishing legacy of the Anasazi -- but not without a price. Set in the contemporary Southwest, "The Haunted Mesa draws on Louis L'Amour's extensive knowledge of Indian lore and mysticism. In this extraordinary book L'Amour tells a tale of epic adventure that takes his readers across the most extraordinary frontier they have ever encountered.

Just started rereading the first Black Company book, and I forgot just how comfy it was. Just a bunch of mercenary bros fighting and pillaging their way across the countryside. I like the newer books, but the first is just comfy.

Can you guys recommend anything with that same sort of feel? I also picked up King’s of the Wyld on a whim, so I’m hoping that’s not terrible.

This worries me. Especially since I’m going to have to read her book and it’s YA.

At least she seemed interested when I recommended she read BoTNS and Black Company.

I'll second the Vorkosigan rec. It's one of the better space operas. There are romantic sub plots involving the protagonist in almost all the books albeit they are very minor/inconsequential in some. Later on in the series two books are full blown romances when the protagonist finally meets "the one" and those are pretty decent as far as romance books can be.

The names of the books are also extremely misleading as they were chosen by the publisher and not the author. There's very little "assassining" going on for books that have Assassin in the title. The protagonist is a dumbass glorified herbalist who blunders his way all across the continent doing dumb shit.

Imo Liveship series is her best work and you can go back to Farseer if you really like her writing. There are minor spoilers in Liveship but they won't affect your enjoyment of the series at all even if you go back and you'll have a better appreciation for the story.

DADOES:
- Deckard is married
- Lots about "Mercerism", a philosophy/religion that emphasizes empathy with animals and other humans
- Androids have no empathy with animals, humans or each other
- Androids are evil and therefore deserve to die
- Phrase "Blade Runner" does not appear
- Word "replicant" does not appear

Blade Runner:
- Deckard is divorced
- Only references to empathy with animals are some of the questions on the Voight-Kampff sessions on Leon and Rachel
- Replicants are plenty empathetic, to other replicants, humans, and other animals (e.g. Roy's dove)
- Replicants are basically slaves and therefore sympathetic characters
- Phrase "Blade Runner" lifted from Burroughs
- Word "replicant" invented by screenwriter relief pitcher (David Peoples)

>> No.12133866

>>12133859
Oh, but I forgot to talk about the similarities:
- Androids (replicants) come to earth, led by Roy Bat[t]y
- Deckard has to kill them all
- Characters similar to Pris and J. F. Sebastian appear
So yeah.

You'll notice that most of the changes to the move made Deckard less "human" and the replicants more so.

(The movie is superior to the book, which I'm not sure I'd even put in Dick's top 10).
