Arguing About Retro vs New Edition

Did science fiction and fantasy peak already? If yes, when did it peak?
Who would win in a fight, Kirk in his prime or young Picard?
New book covers are bad. This isn't open for debate.

I gave up on it ever since Paradox got their greedy little hands on it. Those Swedish kikes ruin anything they touch - can't wait for my 10 eurobucks portrait packs and DLC totaling 500 euro. However, OWoD is more or less complete anyway, and I always thought NWoD was a bit too tryhard for me. I understand why they might've made changes for larpers and actual players of the game, but I just read the fluff for enjoyment.
I actually don't know how it's possible that a series adored by literary fans like WoD has almost zero series attached to it. Only a few by commissioned by WW themselves, which are quite bad, and a few cringy fanfics online. But nothing worthwhile. Even the 90s show was garbage. Shame. It has so much potential. That Star Wars and Warhammer have tens of decent series and WOD has none is a fucking travesty.

WoD was never all that consumer friendly. You can't really sell something like the Tzimisce, at least not as well as sparkly gay vampires. Besides the source material has gone to shit. It's just book after book of horribly written politically correct shit... and all that in a setting where loosing your humanity is one of the main points. Interestingly enough for all the rainbow haired xir's bumping in the night now, Mexico is still a Sabbat held shithole.

Fat? Really? She look fine to me.
And well, I'm not sure I agree. You don't NEED to sell the Tzimisce as anything other than villains, and it's not necessary to incorporate them at all. You could easily put in a Lasombra in there, normies would lose their shit if a decent Lasombra were on-screen.
I guess I don't know much about what's going on with NWoD today. The last I saw was this a couple of days ago:
https://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2018-11-19-paradox-taking-control-of-white-wolf-after-vampire-the-masquerade-lgbtq-controversy
But now I'm not sure how to read this article if you say they were infested with LGBTQ garbage, since maybe this means Paradox is going to force them to normalize and stop putting real life politics into the games. I guess apart from being greedy as fuck, I can't think of many SJW things Paradox have done.

Are we really going to criticize books for prose competency in /sffg/? Plus, Horus Heresy is not that bad. It depends on the author, but compared to some of the shit that's praised in this general (Sanderson, Rothfuss) and that's available from Black Library, it fares quite well by comparison.
I would say GRRM is probably the best third person limited author there is writing fantasy, so comparing anyone to him seems unfair. He's a master at the craft. The only other fantasy writer I've seen with notable prose has been Bakker (apart from the godawful battle scenes where he turns into fucking Herodotus).

Just a reminder, but you can skip around after the first three books depending on what you want to focus on. While there is a timeline most of them follow, a lot of the time you can get an idea of what's going on even without reading them in order. But don't take anyone's word as law, since there's varying opinion on what's good and what isn't. For example, many think #5 is skippable, while others find it one of the best in the series. Probably depends on what you're looking for.
>>12116141
>Dan Abnett
His books are literally the worst in the series, get the fuck out of here. You clearly have no idea what the fuck you're talking about. Stop sucking Abnett's dick. Legion and Prospero Burns are some of the worst fucking books in the whole of Horus Heresy. It's clear that you have never read enough of this series to have a valid opinion, so why even bother?
>Wh40k is right there with any other big franchise like Star Wars, Gaylo or what have you. You have to be a fan to stomach most of the output. I am not that much of a fan.
Wrong again. I hated Dawn of War and more or less anything I touched related to 40K (granted, I still hate 40k and find it boring as fuck). But Horus Heresy I love despite its flaws. Any fucking time I hear anyone talking badly about it on here I hear the same regurgitated shit I've heard from others that haven't read it or maybe read a few of the books out of context because muh legion fanboyism. The mere fact that you think Dan Abnett produced good work for the series is embarrassing.

Lawrence's second series is essentially a Flashman knockoff in the same universe as Prince of Thorns, though Jorg doesn't really feature in any meaningful way.

It's hardly the height of literature, but I'm the type to buy just about anything reminiscent of Flashman, and definitely prefer that sort of protagonist over muh edgy teen badass Jorg.

Listened to about half of it in audio format because I had a long drive, and while I don't normally go for audiobooks the narrator was actually rather good.

Define "peak". Fantasy is tired as fuck at this point if you just want to repackage LotR and D&D, but there's infinite potential there by definition of it being fantasy. SF is in a better place by comparison considering it requires somewhat more initial work from the get-go versus "fantasy landmass with dwarfs hating elves" setup.

I genuinely think HH is one of the best stories ever told. Being a big fan of tragedy and the antiquity might have something to do with it though, as I've yet to read a single other thing that I'd qualify as a tragedy in the proper sense of the word. How it all came together from a bunch of random bullshit, I have no idea, but it's glorious that it did. Really, my only complaint about it is that Horus is an awful caricature. I don't even understand why, because so many characters have depth to them. But where everyone else has a dozen layers to them, Horus just becomes a Saturday morning cartoon villain by the end. I guess that's because he's not a big figure in 40k overall, but they really could've thought it through a little better...

I've said for a long time that Rothfuss is basically playing a game of lazy author chicken with GRRM to see who can stall their highly anticipated installment the longest.

To be honest though I have no idea if anyone even still takes Rothfuss seriously, how long has it been since he published anything? 10 years? His big claim to fame is a trilogy he never finished. GRRM at least had decades of writing under his belt before he basically retired off a 5/7 book series.

I couldn't even get myself to give a fuck about the one that came before it either. World of Ice and Fire or whatever? As much as I love ASoIaF, I do not love it for the worldbuilding. It's one of the laziest versions of fantasy Europe ever. But there's still going to be autists parsing through every word of these ghost-written books to find evidence for their pet theory about what will happen in the last book that'll never even get written. I don't even care about the final book. I just want to see how Stannis goes out.

Anyway you're entitled to dislike any books, subjectively. Objectively however, the general consensus is that Discworld books are pretty good. That doesn't mean everyone likes them, but a lot of people do. Why not let people make up their own mind, instead of saying that the books are buzzword buzzword shit.

So the big question is, of course, what is the latest on Thorn of Emberlain?

We’ve had the cover revealed in the past couple weeks and Gollancz has basically hinted/commited to a 2015 release, so we have our fingers crossed. And unless I get hit by a bus, I’m very confident that it’s going to get a very late 2015 release. Late Autumn. I don’t know if it will be October or November. But late Autumn.

It’s not the one year gap I wanted since Republic of Thieves, but two years compared to five or six? Or seven or eight? I will keep on ratcheting it down and I promise to do better next time.

Well, you’re not in Patrick Rothfuss or George R.R. Martin range…

I’m fairly confident… Pat has outright said on Twitter that he’s not going to be releasing The Doors of Stone in 2015. It’s possible he’s playing a deep game — Pat’s not quite a prankster, but he does have it in him to give people a burst of excited joy. So I wouldn’t be completely surprised. But if we take him at face value it won’t be 2015.

George… I love him dearly, but who knows. I’m fairly confident I’ll beat both of them. So hey, if the two most popular and gigantic fantasy series on planet Earth aren’t out for Christmas, why not go for number 15 or 16?

I recently finished reading Noumenon and Noumenon Infinity by Marina Lostetter.

In 2088 an anstrophysicist discovers a star that is strobing and proposes the creation of a deep-space mission to find out whether the star is a weird natural phenomenon, or something manufactured.

So he ends up securing funding for an expedition using a generation ship, except instead of people having kids they use clones of the most genetically fit people for the job.

In the books they have faster than lightspeed travel but it still takes them 400 years to get to the star and time passes faster on Earth compared to them when they're traveling (2000 years).

The books were pretty interesting in how they subverted tropes and they focused more on the relationships between people and the artificial intelligence that resides on board.

The structure of the story is that it is more of a series of vingettes in which a first person POV is given to a different character each time.

8/10

My nigger. I love Legacy of Kain too. It's probably my favorite story in a game bar none. Having said that, credit has to go to Denis Dyack and others for creating Kain in the first place.
Honestly, God of War is the only thing that comes close for me, though I guess I'll see how the whole trilogy (assuming it is one) shapes up. This new God of War seriously blew me away. Best storytelling since LoK a far as I'm concerned - powerful, heartfelt, and thoroughly competent. I was just amazed at how much detail they squeezed out of the Eddas while weaving a whole new story in that setting while respecting that everything that came with the original. To say that it was the best fantasy experience I've had this decade is probably an understatement. Made me happy I lived long enough to get to play it.
But, yeah, I really miss Legacy of Kain. I can't believe the only other two games we got was a fucking cancelled reboot and some multiplayer game. What the fuck.

>But, yeah, I really miss Legacy of Kain. I can't believe the only other two games we got was a fucking cancelled reboot and some multiplayer game. What the fuck.
its because of money. multiplayer games are big money so they wanted to milk the lok franchise and made nosgoth.

How do you milk a dead franchise, though? There hasn't been a LoK game in ages, and I don't think many people remember it as fondly as we do. To them it's just 'that vampire game with cool voice acting.' It was a terrible idea. But then again, I just read today that Blizzard seriously considered making Diablo a Souls-like game, so I'm pretty sure they're all scratching their heads and grasping for straws at this point as the industry is burning around them.
The only thing I hope for right now is that we get to see another Dragon Age someday. My worst fear is that either one doesn't come out, or that they have the awful idea of turning it into an MMO. I loved Origins, and I found 2 and Inquisition... tolerable. They had their strong moments.

after the disaster that was inquisition and then andromeda? i dont think its happening any time soon. especially because anthem doesnt look like it will have any of biowares storytelling.
its going to be an online only coop shooter with a bare hint of a narrative in between grinding missions in the vain of monster hunter.
not to mention the bioware studio that was responsible for andromeda was full of idiots and has been since then dissolved. many key figures from the older bioware days also "suddenly" quit during or right after andromedas development. which probably contributed in anthems radical departure from typical bioware games.

Inquisition really wasn't that much of a disaster. I hated the MMO-type zoning, but, I enjoyed the story and the characters apart from the annoying elves. And it was nice to see Morrigan again.
But yeah, Anthem is garbage, and a guy that worked on Inquisition made some Twitter post a while back saying goodbye in a way that did not bode well for a future Dragon Age. Still, it's a known IP with a fuckton of fans, both among actual fantasy people and even Tumblrites now. EA can't let it rot forever.

I didn't mind the edge so much in Red Queen's War since the protagonist himself wasn't a Jorg-tier edgelord. His reaction to edgy goings-on was a much more human 'Well fuck me dead, that's horrific, I'm gonna run as far away as possible' sort of deal. But yeah, probably wouldn't recommend it to a 12 yr old.

Wizard of earthsea and farthest shore are god-tier. Tombs of atuan is a bit behind. Rest of earthsea, don't bother.
Also comparing leguin and tolkien to pullmann is frankly insulting.

Nice, yeah I heard a lot of good things about it. The premise sounded kind of lame but since people said it was awesome I figured that the premise just didn't do it justice.

You got your gritty political intrigue also there's zombies or dragons or whatever fantasy inspired by GRRM, your Sandersonian stories built around a high concept setting with cardboard characters, your heroic fantasy about callow youths rising to slay evil lords but now in an obligatory non-European-inspired setting (China is the current fad), so-called "military fantasy" of the sort pioneered by Glen Cook in the 80s, your fantasy-that's-actually-a-scifi predictable twist stories, and of course your sweeping faux-historical epics.

Nary an elf or dwarf to be seen in most of the hottest names in fantasy of the last 20 years.

Earthsea and Tombs are fantastic. Tombs can almost be read as a stand-alone story. The Farthest Shore is good also.
Since it seems to be under most peoples' radars, the new His Dark Materials book (yes NEW, it's a prequel to the original series, and the upcoming book is set after) is absolutely fantastic YA and just as enjoyable as the original series.

I didn't even know this was a thing. I really loved HDM when I first read it and it lived up to my memories when I reread it a few years ago. I'll give this a read.

I didn't like it and I have very tolerant tastes. But I think it doesn't evolve, so read a few chapters and if you want more of the same you'll get it.
